Tottenham climb out of relegation zone after crucial win at Aston Villa
Spurs finally left the relegation zone after Conor Gallagher and Richarlison struck early at Villa Park, but Roberto De Zerbi refused to call it a turnaround.

Tottenham Hotspur climbed out of the Premier League relegation zone with a 2-1 win at Aston Villa, but the escape remains only partial. Conor Gallagher put Spurs ahead in the 12th minute and Richarlison added a second in the 25th, sending Roberto De Zerbi’s side one point above 18th-placed West Ham United with three matches left.
The result mattered because West Ham had opened the door the day before, losing 3-0 at Brentford. Tottenham took full advantage at Villa Park, producing what Sky Sports described as arguably their best performance of the season and controlling a first half in which Aston Villa failed to register an attempt on goal.
De Zerbi had spent the buildup urging his players to shut out the noise around the club and fight to avoid what he cast as the most embarrassing relegation in Premier League history. After the final whistle, he said he felt “nothing” because the season is not finished, a response that matched the wider reality around Tottenham: one encouraging afternoon does not erase months of drift.

The performance offered evidence of structure as well as urgency. Gallagher’s opener arrived early, and Richarlison finished from a Mathys Tel cross to make it 2-0 before the half-hour mark. Sky Sports noted that Tottenham’s two-goal lead after 25 minutes was their earliest in a Premier League match since December 2024 against Southampton. Emiliano Buendia’s stoppage-time header only softened the margin.
ESPN reported that the win was Tottenham’s first back-to-back league victories since the opening two matchdays of the season, a detail that underlined how rare consistency has been. Aston Villa, meanwhile, made seven changes from the side that lost to Nottingham Forest in the first leg of their Europa League semi-final, and Spurs exploited the rotation with a sharp, front-foot start.

For Tottenham, the table now offers temporary relief rather than comfort. The club have three league games remaining, beginning with a home match against Leeds United on Monday, May 11, 2026, while West Ham host Arsenal. After so much instability, the Villa result has revived survival hopes, but the season will only be judged as rescued if Spurs turn one decisive win into a sustained finish.
