Gunshots cut through the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner and sent President Donald Trump, Melania Trump and other senior officials out of the Washington Hilton as law enforcement moved in and a suspect was taken into custody.

The annual dinner, which dates to 1921 and traditionally draws the president, first lady, senior government officials and journalists, was interrupted on April 25, 2026, before it could unfold as planned. The event was canceled after the shooting, and officials said the case could still lead to additional charges, including possible terrorism counts, as the investigation develops. The disruption was especially striking because Trump had said just weeks earlier that he would attend the dinner for the first time as president, after skipping it throughout his first term and the first dinner of his second term.

Trump later told reporters at a White House press briefing that he had spoken with a Secret Service officer who was shot but protected by a bulletproof vest. He said the officer was “doing great” and said he planned to reschedule the dinner. White House Correspondents’ Association president Weijia Jiang called the shooting a “harrowing moment” and said the organization would review what happened, while thanking law enforcement and wishing the injured officer a speedy recovery.

Investigators identified the suspect in multiple reports as Cole Tomas Allen, a 31-year-old from Torrance, California. NBC News reported that Allen was allegedly armed with a shotgun, handgun and knives when he rushed a security checkpoint and exchanged gunfire with law enforcement. Officials said the suspected target appeared to be Trump administration officials, a detail that has intensified questions about how close the assailant got before the response began.

The venue carried its own grim history. The Washington Hilton was also the site of the March 30, 1981 assassination attempt on Ronald Reagan, who was shot after leaving a speech there just 69 days into his presidency. That memory gave the latest breach at the same hotel a sharp and unsettling echo, with a major political gathering turning in seconds into a security crisis. Trump said politics is a dangerous line of work, and the annual dinner would go on despite the violence, but the night will now be remembered as a stress test of presidential protection at one of Washington’s most watched civilian events.
