Nick Adams, 41, was named Special Presidential Envoy for American Tourism, Exceptionalism, and Values, announcing the appointment in an X post on Tuesday, months after his nomination as U.S. ambassador to Malaysia fell through. The appointment took effect on March 17 and appears to be a new position.

"MAJOR ANNOUNCEMENT," read the statement posted to Adams's social media that morning. "President Trump has appointed Nick Adams to the position of Special Presidential Envoy for American Tourism, Exceptionalism, and Values. In this role, Mr. Adams will play a vital role in revitalizing America's diplomatic position as a beacon of free speech, the freedom to worship, and a land of unlimited opportunity for those who align with the traditions and values of the United States of America."

Adams, who has built a social media following by styling himself as a conservative "alpha male," leaned into the promotional framing of the role. "I am beyond honored to serve my country, the American people and the greatest President and Secretary of State we have ever had," he declared. "I look forward to serving as America's brand Ambassador, bringing the message of America's excellence to the entire world. With America 250, the FIFA World Cup, and the Olympics coming up, the world needs to be reminded of all we have to offer."

The White House confirmed the role in a statement, with spokesperson Davis Ingle saying Adams is "an America First patriot who will represent our country well as we celebrate our Nation's 250th anniversary of independence," adding that the administration looks forward to working with him to "showcase and advance America's excellence across the world stage."

According to the State Department, Adams possesses "skills and accomplishments over the years as a political commentator, policy author, and educator" that will position him well for the role. His White House biography describes him as a "political and policy author, thought leader and educator" and lists him as Executive Director of the Foundation for Liberty and American Greatness, a Texas and Florida-based nonprofit focused on civics education.

The appointment comes with notable baggage. Adams had previously been nominated by Trump to serve as U.S. ambassador to Malaysia. His nomination had been dropped following backlash in the Muslim-majority nation, where his history of criticizing Islam was poorly received. Public records show that his nomination was received by the Senate in July and languished until it was returned to Trump's desk in January.

Born and raised in Australia, Adams worked for years as a conservative politician before becoming a naturalized U.S. citizen, and in recent years has become known for his posts about being an "Alpha Male," visiting Hooters, and a frank enthusiasm for women's bodies. His involvement in public affairs began when he was elected to Ashfield City Council in western Sydney in 2004 and became the country's youngest deputy mayor a year later. His tenure was not without controversy, including a heated confrontation with local media that led to threats of expulsion from the Liberal Party. He resigned in 2012 and immigrated to the United States, acquiring American citizenship in 2021.

The Washington Post described Adams in 2024 as "the Trump-backed raconteur who is teaching America's young men the art of being hard to deal with," and characterized his brand of conservatism as "so over-the-top, so uncanny that it almost seems like performance art."

Trump announced last year he would nominate Adams to serve as ambassador to Malaysia, a nomination that never came up for a Senate vote. Back in 2020, Trump had also appointed Adams to serve on the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars' board of trustees. The envoy title, which sits within the State Department, marks his third formal presidential appointment, and the first to survive the confirmation process entirely by bypassing it.
