Trump rushed from White House Correspondents’ Dinner after shots fired
Shots near the Washington Hilton’s screening area sent Trump, Melania Trump and JD Vance into a rapid Secret Service evacuation as 2,600 guests took cover.

A security breach at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner forced Secret Service agents to rush President Donald Trump off the stage at the Washington Hilton on Saturday night, turning one of Washington’s most closely watched political gatherings into a continuity-of-government response inside a packed ballroom. Shots were reported near the main security screening area outside or near the ballroom, and first lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance and Cabinet officials were also hustled to safety.
Officials said the suspect was taken into custody, and early reports said the president, first lady and all protectees were safe. Reuters reported that the armed man, carrying a shotgun, tried to breach security and fired at a Secret Service agent. CBS News said the evacuation happened just after 8:30 p.m. Eastern, as agents moved quickly to clear the president and other dignitaries from the room.
Inside the ballroom, the scene broke into chaos. Reporters and guests described loud bangs, tactical officers with long guns moving through the dining room, and attendees dropping under tables as waiters fled. Reuters reported that many of the roughly 2,600 people in attendance took cover. CNN said Trump was taken to a secure location inside the hotel before returning to the White House, while the event was interrupted and attendees sheltered in place or were evacuated.

The episode carried added weight because it was Trump’s first White House Correspondents’ Dinner as a sitting president. The dinner is one of the most visible annual gatherings in Washington, bringing together the White House, congressional leaders, journalists and senior officials under a heavy security posture. A breach involving the president, vice president, first lady and top Cabinet members immediately drew scrutiny to the protection of national political events and the strain on the Secret Service as it manages high-risk public appearances.
Trump later said the suspect had been “taken down” and praised the Secret Service and law enforcement for acting quickly and bravely. He also posted images and video of the suspected shooter on Truth Social and told reporters that it was a dangerous profession, adding that “the show go on.” The Washington Hilton remained under a heavy security response as the investigation continued with the Secret Service and the Metropolitan Police Department.
