Tubby's Creek Active on Card Sound Road; Mosquito Creek Starts March 12
Monroe County confirmed Tubby’s Creek Bridge on Card Sound Road is under replacement work and announced preliminary work at nearby Mosquito Creek; the two bridges sit roughly 3,500 feet apart.

Monroe County posted an update March 4, 2026, confirming ongoing construction at Tubby’s Creek Bridge on Card Sound Road and announcing preliminary work on the nearby Mosquito Creek Bridge, the county said. Tubby’s Creek Bridge, built in 1969, is described in county and community notices as "scheduled for replacement," and officials warn motorists to expect a one-lane alternating traffic configuration for the life of the project.
Local notices conflict on when crews first mobilized. The Key West Chamber of Commerce posted on Jan. 23 that preliminary work would begin Feb. 9, 2026, with a four-week phase of shoulder clearing and pavement widening, followed by a March 9 lane closure to allow demolition of the eastbound lane. By contrast, the Monroe County webpage and a Facebook excerpt list the Tubby’s Creek replacement as "scheduled for replacement starting March 2," with the county text indicating a different lane closure plan.
Monroe County and Key West Chamber posts both set out the same preliminary activities. "Construction crews will be on-site to perform preliminary project work consisting of clearing vegetation from roadway shoulders and widening the pavement at Tubby’s Creek Bridge on Card Sound Road," the notices state, and Key West Chamber adds that during that four-week phase the shoulders will be closed while both lanes remain open for two-way traffic.
Traffic control language differs between the county and chamber notices. Monroe County's notice says "the contractor will close the westbound lane to traffic and set up temporary traffic signals to alternate bi-directional traffic to one lane," while Key West Chamber and KeysNews copies say "the contractor will close the eastbound lane to traffic and set up temporary traffic signals to alternate bi-directional traffic to one lane so demolition of the eastbound lane may begin." All versions agree that "the bridge will remain one lane with alternating traffic for the duration of the project" and that traffic signal timing will be adjusted in morning and afternoon to accommodate traffic heading to and from the Ocean Reef community.

Officials and community posts uniformly set the project length at roughly one and a half years. "This project has a construction duration of approximately 18 months, weather dependent," appears in Monroe County and Key West Chamber messaging, and Instagram and Facebook fragments published by local accounts reiterate that crews will set up a one-lane configuration on Card Sound Road and that traffic will be managed with alternating signals.
The county update also announced preliminary work at Mosquito Creek Bridge, located about 3,500 feet from Tubby’s Creek along Card Sound Road; however, the county post did not list a start date for Mosquito Creek in the county excerpt. Monroe County and the chamber both promise ongoing communications: "Updates will be provided throughout the project's construction phases." Residents travelling Card Sound Road, especially those to and from Ocean Reef, should plan for signal-controlled alternating traffic and altered signal timing during peak morning and afternoon periods.
