Tuchel drops Foden and Palmer in chemistry-first England squad
Phil Foden, Cole Palmer and Trent Alexander-Arnold were left out as Thomas Tuchel named an England squad built around chemistry, not star power.

Thomas Tuchel chose confrontation over comfort, leaving Phil Foden, Cole Palmer, Harry Maguire and Trent Alexander-Arnold out of England’s 26-man World Cup squad and making a clear argument that cohesion would matter more than reputation in the heat of tournament football.
The squad, unveiled in a live show from Wembley Stadium, was shaped around what Tuchel called “the team and the chemistry.” He said international football is about trust, role clarity and leadership standards, adding that the best group is not necessarily the 26 most talented players. That principle was reflected in the inclusion of Ivan Toney, Djed Spence, Jordan Henderson, Noni Madueke and Jarell Quansah, while the headline omissions will inevitably dominate debate.
England’s final list includes three goalkeepers, nine defenders, six midfielders and eight forwards. The goalkeepers are Dean Henderson, Jordan Pickford and James Trafford. The defenders are Dan Burn, Marc Guéhi, Reece James, Ezri Konsa, Tino Livramento, Nico O’Reilly, Jarell Quansah, Djed Spence and John Stones. The midfielders are Elliot Anderson, Jude Bellingham, Jordan Henderson, Kobbie Mainoo, Declan Rice and Morgan Rogers. The forwards are Eberechi Eze, Anthony Gordon, Harry Kane, Noni Madueke, Marcus Rashford, Bukayo Saka, Ivan Toney and Ollie Watkins.

The selection also underlined how much Tuchel is leaning into tournament readiness over name value. England’s release said 18 players will be appearing on the World Cup stage for the first time, while nine of the squad have no previous senior tournament experience. That is a striking reset for a country that has spent decades assembling gifted sides only to watch them unravel under pressure.
Harry Kane will captain England at his third World Cup, equalling Billy Wright’s England record. Jordan Henderson is set for a fourth World Cup appearance, matching Sir Bobby Charlton. Jordan Pickford, John Stones and Marcus Rashford will also be at their third World Cup. Tuchel still has elite class at his disposal, with Kane, Jude Bellingham, Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka forming the spine of the team, but he has made a point of backing the players he believes fit together best.

England’s pre-camp begins in Palm Beach, Florida, on 1 June, before the squad moves to its permanent base in Kansas City on 13 June after two warm-up fixtures. The team opens against Croatia on 17 June in a tournament split across the United States, Canada and Mexico from 11 June to 19 July. England arrive after qualifying with eight wins from eight and no goals conceded, a perfect run that gives Tuchel room to refine rather than rebuild. The gamble now is whether his chemistry-first England can do what so many more famous squads have not.
