Tuchel set to omit Foden, Palmer and Maguire from England squad
Tuchel’s World Cup call points to balance over reputation, with Foden, Palmer and Maguire facing a brutal cut as Henderson and Toney move closer to the plane.

Thomas Tuchel is drawing a sharp line around England’s World Cup identity before the squad is even named. Phil Foden, Cole Palmer and Harry Maguire are set to miss out when Tuchel announces his 26-man group on Friday, a decision that says as much about his tactical priorities as it does about who is left at home.
The omission of Foden and Palmer is especially striking because both were in Tuchel’s previous England squad in March. Leaving out two of the country’s most gifted attacking players suggests Tuchel is choosing a narrower, more structured tournament plan, one built around balance, defined roles and dressing-room order rather than simply loading the squad with the most celebrated names.

That approach has clear winners. Ivan Toney is expected to be included, a notable recall after his move to Saudi Pro League club Al-Ahli, while Jordan Henderson is also in line for selection, extending a surprise resurgence in Tuchel’s thinking. Morgan Gibbs-White, who was added to a recent Tuchel squad as injury cover for Palmer, is also projected to miss the final cut, a sign that England’s attacking pool remains crowded even after the high-profile omissions.
Maguire’s expected absence adds another layer to the decision. The defender said he was “shocked and gutted” by the call, and his omission removes one of England’s most experienced voices from a squad that will go to the United States, Canada and Mexico for the tournament running from June 11 to July 19, 2026. For Tuchel, that may be the point: a cleaner hierarchy, fewer compromises and a squad shaped for tournament control rather than sentiment.
The risk is obvious. Foden and Palmer offer creativity, unpredictability and the ability to change a match against compact opponents, while Maguire brings set-piece threat and established seniority. England’s final list must be submitted by June 2, and FIFA’s roster limit leaves no room for hesitation. Tuchel’s choices suggest he wants an England side that can survive the pressure of a long tournament, even if it means leaving some of the most recognisable names in the country behind.
