Surveillance footage captured a hooded man walking up behind a pedestrian and stabbing him in the back at the corner of Stockton and Sacramento streets in Chinatown just after 1:00 p.m. Thursday, leaving the victim collapsed on the sidewalk and prompting a rapid law-enforcement response. The video, described by local outlets and reportedly obtained by KRON4, shows the attacker thrusting a knife into the victim’s lower back before briskly walking away.

San Francisco Police officers arrived at the scene at about 1:13 p.m. and began first aid as medics reached the corner, police said. The victim was rushed to a hospital with life-threatening injuries, according to San Francisco police reporting. A late Friday update from the Chinatown Merchants United Association said the victim underwent a second surgery on Friday.

Sheriff’s deputies on extra patrols in the neighborhood located a person matching the video description a few blocks away on Powell Street and detained him roughly 10 minutes after the attack near the 600 block of Powell, officials said. "Sheriff's deputies were here for extra patrols in Chinatown leading up to Chinese New Year, and they were able to quickly locate the suspect within ten minutes," San Francisco Police Captain Christopher Del Gandio told KTVU. San Francisco police said officers developed probable cause to arrest the suspect, but as of Friday afternoon the department had not released the person's identity or formal charges.

Surveillance camera networks played a central role in the investigation. Police reviewed footage that shows the suspect strolling along Stockton Street before suddenly lunging at the man near the crosswalk; several bystanders are visible in the video and one appears to pull out a phone to call for help. Local television stations have broadcast stills and video frames from the surveillance cameras.

The unprovoked daylight stabbing intensified safety concerns in Chinatown ahead of the city’s large Chinese New Year events. Merchants and residents said the footage circulated widely across the neighborhood. "Lots of people have pictures, lots of people have video. All of Chinatown last night, everybody said why your shop, what happened in front of your shop? I said, I don't know," Rawnie Chan, manager at Flags International Services, told KTVU.

The attack also came hours before an unrelated incident in the Tenderloin involving Mayor Daniel Lurie’s police security team, drawing further attention to citywide public-safety tensions. Critics cited by one report raised questions about San Francisco's policies on releasing mugshots and other information, saying transparency around suspect identification affects trust during high-profile incidents.

Police asked anyone with information to contact the department at 415-575-4444 or send a text to TIP411 and begin the message with SFPD. As investigators continue to review surveillance and witness accounts, the department has said identity, charges and motive remain pending; further updates are expected as the case develops.
