USATF sanctions Traverse City Bayshore Marathon; 2026 race becomes Olympic Trials qualifier
USATF sanctions the 2026 Bayshore Marathon, making Traverse City's race eligible as a U.S. Olympic Trials qualifier and increasing its appeal to elite runners.

The 2026 Bayshore Marathon has received official sanctioning from USA Track & Field, a move that makes the Traverse City race eligible as a qualifying event for the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials. Organizers announced the sanction on social media and the Traverse City Track Club said the designation will raise the race’s profile among athletes aiming for Trials entry.
Sanctioning is significant because USATF is the national governing body for road running and related disciplines, and recognition requires adherence to USATF competition rules and use of a USATF-certified course and map. The Bayshore Marathon website confirms the course is USATF certified and that race operations follow applicable competition rules. The site also sets out participant requirements such as remaining to the right of cones and course markers and running no more than two abreast where the course narrows, and it enforces bib assignment rules that can lead to disqualification and bans for unauthorized bib use.
The Traverse City Track Club’s executive director, Carie Wille, framed the sanctioning as both a community and competitive opportunity. Wille said, “The Traverse City Track Club looks forward to welcoming all athletes participating in the upcoming Bayshore races, but this year presents a unique opportunity to welcome those looking to potentially qualify for the Olympic Team Trials Marathon event.” Wille added, “The sanctioning recognition helps elevate the Bayshore Marathon’s status amongst athletes and will help attract even more elite runners to Traverse City this coming Memorial Day weekend.”
The announcement follows an earlier USATF recognition tied to the 2023 race. The 2023 Bayshore produced three marathoners who met Trials standards: Zachary Ripley ran 2:16:35, Noah Steffin ran 2:17:00, and Hannah Becker ran 2:36:58. Ripley and Becker set course records in 2023 that, according to local reporting, have not been bested in the two Bayshore races since.

Qualifying standards have varied across recent Trials cycles. For the 2024 Olympic Trials the men's standard was faster than 2:18:00 and the women's standard was 2:37:00. Reporting on the 2028 cycle indicates the men's Trials standard has been tightened to 2:16:00 while the women's standard remains 2:37:00; local coverage notes a 2:16:00 mark has not yet been achieved on the Bayshore course.
The 2026 Bayshore Marathon is scheduled for the morning of Saturday, May 23, 2026. Registration for the full marathon, half marathon, and 10K is sold out, with only waiting list registrations and charity bibs remaining. The Bayshore site also references a 2026 USATF sanctioned event logo asset dated 2025-12-18, reflecting recent updates to promotional materials.
For Grand Traverse County residents, the USATF sanction means the Memorial Day weekend event will carry renewed national relevance and likely draw competitive fields trying to post qualifying times. With the race sold out, local businesses, volunteers, and race-day spectators should prepare for a busy weekend on May 23 as elite and local runners converge on Traverse City.
