Vondrousova charged with refusing doping test amid privacy dispute

Marketa Vondrousova, the 2023 Wimbledon champion, has been charged with refusing a doping test after a December 2025 incident she says came at a breaking point in a long run of physical and mental strain.

The International Tennis Integrity Agency, tennis’s independent integrity body, is handling the case under the Tennis Anti-Doping Programme. Under those rules, refusing or evading sample collection can bring a ban of up to four years if the charge is upheld. Unlike some anti-doping matters, the allegation does not automatically trigger a provisional suspension, leaving Vondrousova free to compete while the process continues.

Vondrousova said a doping-control officer arrived at about 8:15 p.m. and demanded an immediate test. She described the visit as a “serious intrusion into my privacy” and said she reacted out of fear because she did not know who was asking to enter her home. In her account, the pressure had been building for months, and she said she had “reached a breaking point after months of physical and mental stress.”

The Czech player also said she suffered an Acute Stress Reaction and is working to clear her name. Her case now sits at the intersection of two forces that increasingly collide in elite sport: strict anti-doping enforcement, which depends on athletes complying with out-of-competition testing, and a growing willingness among players to speak openly about psychological distress.

The scrutiny lands on a player whose career has already been disrupted by injury. After becoming the first unseeded woman to win the Wimbledon singles title, Vondrousova missed much of 2024 with shoulder problems and later withdrew from the 2025 US Open because of injury. That history has sharpened attention on how much strain she has carried into the current dispute.

For tennis authorities, refusal cases are among the sport’s most serious anti-doping allegations because the system depends on access, timely sample collection and clear compliance. For Vondrousova, the central issue is whether her response will be treated as a breach of testing rules or as a reaction shaped by fear and acute stress. The case will test both the reach of the anti-doping code and the extent to which tennis can accommodate the pressures players say they are under.
