WakeMed Lifts Seasonal Visitor Limits, Healthy Children Allowed Starting Feb. 16
WakeMed will allow symptom-free children of any age to visit hospital nursing units and patient care areas starting Feb. 16 after lifting seasonal limits first imposed Dec. 22.

WakeMed is restoring unrestricted visits by children across its Raleigh hospitals after pausing them for roughly two months during the winter respiratory surge. Effective Monday, February 16, JoCo Report said, “children of all ages who are free of contagious illnesses are welcome in all hospital nursing units and patient care areas across WakeMed.”
The system first put seasonal visitor rules in place in December, announcing on Dec. 18 that “seasonal visitation restrictions at WakeMed’s hospitals will begin on Monday, December 22.” WakeMed’s Dec. 18 release said children younger than age 12 would not be allowed to visit patients in WakeMed hospital nursing units, patient care areas and waiting rooms, and explicitly named WakeMed Healthplex emergency departments and WakeMed Mental Health & Well-Being Hospital - WakeBrook as included locations.
WakeMed framed the December decision around protection for vulnerable groups, noting that “Every year, respiratory viruses like respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and influenza arrive in our community” and that for “premature infants, newborn babies, young children, pregnant women, and people who are immunocompromised, they can cause severe illness or even death.” The system added then that “Our number one priority is the health and safety of our patients and staff” and that “Restricting visitation is best clinical practice.”
Local reporting and national outlets tied the policy shift to changing community illness levels. JoCo Report quoted WakeMed’s return-to-normal rationale: “A decrease in the prevalence of respiratory illnesses in the community prompts the return to normal visitation status,” and thanked families, saying “WakeMed appreciates the support and cooperation of patients, their loved ones, and the surrounding community over the past two months.” National Today likewise framed the lift as signaling “an improvement in community health conditions, allowing the hospital to return to normal operations and accommodate more visitors for the benefit of patients.”

Regional coverage in December put WakeMed’s restrictions in a wider context. WTVD/ABC11 reported that multiple providers adjusted visitor rules amid rising RSV and influenza, and noted that the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services had reported the season’s first pediatric influenza death. WTVD also reported that Cape Fear Valley Health implemented visitor age and masking rules in waiting rooms, including requiring visitors be 12 or older in most areas and masks in emergency department and clinic waiting rooms.
WakeMed continued to urge caution for visitors after the lift: “As always, anyone with symptoms of any acute, contagious illness, should not visit WakeMed out of respect for our patients,” a line included in its December release. For questions about visitation at WakeMed’s Raleigh campus, the health system lists contact 919-350-8000 and address 3000 New Bern Ave., Raleigh, NC 27610.
