Washington and New York brace for massive Fourth of July security sweep

Hundreds of thousands of residents and visitors were expected in Washington for several days of July 4 celebrations as officials tightened security across the National Mall, Lower Manhattan and the waterfront. District officials expected crowds for the Salute to America fireworks, annual parades and other events tied to America’s 250th anniversary.

Mayor Muriel Bowser, District public safety officials and federal partners briefed the public on Monday, June 29, 2026, urging people to use public transportation and sign up for DC250 text messages and AlertDC. They also warned that frequent flyovers were expected on July 4 and said a new 2026 map was created to help people find safe viewing locations for the flyovers and fireworks. On the National Mall, the Salute to America Celebration and Fireworks has been designated a National Special Security Event by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, with magnetometers opening at 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 4, and fireworks scheduled to begin around 10:30 p.m.

The 2026 Washington celebrations were part of Freedom 250, marking the 250th anniversary of the United States, and the National Park Service warned of extreme heat. Visitors were told to bring water, snacks, sunscreen and light clothing. Officials also pointed attendees to prohibited-items guidance and security screening for the West Front of the U.S. Capitol, while related fireworks were set for Anacostia Park and other parts of the city.

At a Wednesday press conference, NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch and Mayor Zohran Mamdani said the city remained in a “heightened-threat environment,” though there were no known specific or credible threats. Thousands of officers were deployed across the five boroughs on 12-hour tours and were told to stay at their posts unless relieved in person.

The security package included metal detectors, bag checks, K-9 teams, heavy weapons units, the bomb squad, aviation teams and a large law-enforcement presence along the waterfront. The NYPD anti-drone squad was also active after prior violations of flight restrictions, and illegal drones were to be seized. Sail4th 250, the largest parade of tall ships ever assembled, featured 40 vessels sailing from the Verrazzano Bridge, with intermittent West Side Highway closures below 59th Street in place until about 2 p.m.

Consumer fireworks are illegal in New York City. The NYC Health Department estimated there were 80 emergency department visits around the 2025 holiday for fireworks-related injuries, many involving children and young adults, and more than 100 low-flying U.S. and allied aircraft were expected over New York Harbor as part of an International Aerial Review.
