Yankees Face Giants on Netflix in MLB's 2026 Opening Night Debut
Max Fried threw 6⅓ shutout innings as the Yankees blanked the Giants 7-0 on Netflix, marking MLB's first-ever live game on the streaming platform.

The Yankees opened the 2026 season with a 7-0 win over the San Francisco Giants, taking a lead early and coasting behind 6⅓ shutout innings from Max Fried. The victory, played at Oracle Park in San Francisco, was the first-ever live MLB broadcast on Netflix and gave New York its fifth straight Opening Day win.
Facing Giants ace Logan Webb, the Yankees pounced in the second inning with six straight hits to take a 6-0 lead, with Trent Grisham — playing his first game since returning to the team on a signed qualifying offer last winter — capping the rally with a triple. Two more runs followed in the fifth inning, enough to raise Webb's ERA to 10.80. His seven earned runs were more than any start he had in 2025.
The top of the fifth was particularly damaging: three straight singles followed by a forceout with a throwing error made it 7-0 New York. Webb had a 10.80 ERA after five innings, having thrown 86 pitches, recorded seven strikeouts and allowed six earned runs. Keaton Winn relieved Webb and worked around a leadoff walk, in the process ensuring that Aaron Judge had officially started the 2026 MLB season with a golden sombrero. New York's captain went 0-for-5 with four strikeouts and became the first reigning MVP to strike out four times on Opening Day.
Fried was virtually untouchable after a shaky start. He settled down following a wobbly first inning and retired 15 of the final 16 batters he faced. His full line: 6⅓ innings, two hits, zero runs, one walk and four strikeouts. While Webb was struggling, Fried was cruising — recording another 1-2-3 inning in the fifth while holding a seven-run lead.
The shutout underscored the contrast in form between two of the game's better starters. Webb was making his fifth consecutive Opening Day start for the Giants, the second-longest streak in franchise history behind Hall of Famer Juan Marichal, and had finished fourth in National League Cy Young voting after leading the majors in innings (207) and the NL in strikeouts (224) in 2025. Fried, meanwhile, had signed an eight-year, $218 million contract before the 2025 season and delivered by going 19-5 with a 2.86 ERA, setting career highs in wins, starts (32), innings pitched (195.1) and strikeouts (189).
The loss was a difficult debut for new Giants manager Tony Vitello. Vitello became the first person to go directly from college head coach to big-league manager, and Giants president of baseball operations Buster Posey made the decision in part to inject the former Tennessee head coach's energy and intensity into a team that has hovered around .500 for the past four seasons. The Giants haven't reached the postseason or posted a winning record since 2021.

For New York, the blowout was an encouraging sign after a painful 2025 exit. Three-time MVP Aaron Judge leads the Yankees, who began their campaign looking to snap a 17-year World Series championship drought. The team led the league in runs (849) and home runs (274) last season before falling to the Toronto Blue Jays in the ALDS.
Opening Night also marked the regular-season debut of MLB's new automated balls and strikes system that allows players to challenge balls and strikes. From 2026 to 2028, Netflix will kick off each MLB season with a single game on Opening Night, the T-Mobile Home Run Derby, plus an additional special event game each year. Wednesday's broadcast confirmed the partnership works on the field and off it. The two teams meet again Friday.
