Logan Webb took the mound at Oracle Park on Wednesday night carrying unfinished business. Three years ago, Aaron Judge launched a first-inning home run off the Giants ace to spark a 5-0 Yankees rout on Opening Day 2023. Webb, making his fifth consecutive Opening Day start for San Francisco, faced Judge again with the 2026 season on the line.

First pitch was scheduled for 8:05 p.m. ET from Oracle Park, streamed globally on Netflix, marking the first time a live MLB game was carried by the service. An MLB Opening Night pregame show on Netflix began at 7 p.m. ET. The broadcast put a streaming giant at the center of a sport that has historically lived on cable, and did so on the earliest non-international Opening Day in MLB history. The 2026 Major League Baseball season led off on Netflix with Yankees vs. Giants in a star-studded opener live at Oracle Park in San Francisco.

"I think the last time the Yankees came, Aaron had a comment that was like, 'We're the Yankees, we've got to give them a show,'" Webb said. "We're the Giants, we've got to give them a show, too. This is show business, so we're going to go out there and hopefully compete our butts off and come out victorious."

Max Fried filled the role of ace for the Yankees last year but, because of the timing of Gerrit Cole's injury, did not receive the honor of starting on Opening Day. That changed Wednesday. In 2025, Fried set career highs in wins, starts (32), innings pitched (195 1/3) and strikeouts (189), earning selection as an American League All-Star. Webb, for his part, finished fourth in National League Cy Young voting after leading the Majors in innings pitched (207) and the NL in strikeouts (224) in 2025.

The Yankees came to San Francisco without several key pieces due to injury. Shortstop Anthony Volpe is continuing to rehab from left shoulder surgery and is not expected to return until May. Gerrit Cole, Carlos Rodón, and Clarke Schmidt are all rehabbing from various procedures. New York's lineup still carried considerable firepower: Trent Grisham led off in center field, followed by Aaron Judge in right, Cody Bellinger in left, Ben Rice at first base, Giancarlo Stanton at designated hitter, Jazz Chisholm Jr. at second, José Caballero at shortstop, Ryan McMahon at third, and Austin Wells catching.

Bellinger's presence in the lineup came at a significant cost. The outfielder signed a five-year contract worth $162.5 million that included a $20 million signing bonus, a full no-trade clause, and opt-outs after the second and third seasons. He backed up that investment in 2025, posting a .272/.334/.480 slash line with 29 home runs, 98 RBIs, 13 stolen bases across 152 games, and 12 defensive runs saved in the outfield.

The Yankees are led by seven-time All-Star and three-time American League MVP Aaron Judge, who is also a Northern California native returning to the Bay Area spotlight. The Yankees faced three-time All-Star Rafael Devers and the Giants. The Giants' lineup featured Heliot Ramos in left, Devers at first base, Matt Chapman at third, Willy Adames at shortstop, Luis Arraez at second, Jerar Encarnacion at designated hitter, Jung Hoo Lee in right, Harrison Bader in center, and Patrick Bailey catching.

Albert Pujols, Barry Bonds, Anthony Rizzo, Hunter Pence, CC Sabathia, Lauren Shehadi, and Elle Duncan served as analysts for Netflix for the three events. MLB Network's Emmy Award-winning production team co-produced the telecast, plus pre- and postgame coverage in partnership with Netflix.

The Opening Night arrangement is not a one-off. Beyond Opening Night, Netflix will stream two other notable events during the 2026 MLB season: the T-Mobile Home Run Derby in Philadelphia on July 13 and the MLB Field of Dreams Game between the Phillies and Twins in Dyersville, Iowa, on August 13. The Field of Dreams game will feature All-Star outfielder Byron Buxton and the Minnesota Twins taking on eight-time All-Star and two-time MVP Bryce Harper, streaming live from Dyersville, Iowa, for the first time in four years.

The 2026 MLB season officially kicked off Wednesday, March 25, with the Yankees-at-Giants three-game series. Playing across Wednesday, Friday and Saturday of MLB Opening Week, the long-standing rivals made their 2026 season debut on Netflix. The remaining 28 teams opened Thursday, with 11 games on the schedule including Arizona at the Los Angeles Dodgers, Boston at Cincinnati, and Kansas City at Atlanta. Whether Webb settled his account with Judge, or Fried extended the Yankees' Opening Night edge, the night belonged to a sport finding a new home on the biggest streaming platform in the world.
