Yankees pair Gerrit Cole and Max Fried behind Aaron Judge

Gerrit Cole and Max Fried took the mound in the same Yankees rotation for the first time, giving New York a rare chance to stack two frontline starters behind Aaron Judge’s No. 99. The headline hook was Judge’s jersey number, but the larger development was a roster built to carry more weight in October than a single regular-season stat line can show.

Cole remains the anchor of that plan. MLB.com described him in May as the Yankees’ longtime ace and the unanimous 2023 American League Cy Young Award winner, a résumé that makes any rotation stronger the moment he is available. Fried had been expected to help lead the staff in Cole’s absence, and when Fried was formally fitted for pinstripes in December 2024, he said he was looking forward to pairing with Cole at the top of the rotation.

That pairing matters because elite starting pitching changes postseason math. A club with more than one trusted ace can set series plans differently, use the bullpen with more restraint and push opponents into tougher matchups from the first inning. For the Yankees, that kind of depth is the difference between a staff that can survive the summer and one that can shorten games when every October run matters.

The timing also showed how the Yankees intend to use both arms when they have them. On July 21, the club announced Fried would start Game 2 of a doubleheader against the Pirates in the Bronx, with Cole taking the opener. That kind of alignment gives New York a way to front-load power in the rotation and keep pressure on opposing lineups over consecutive games.

Judge’s presence still frames the franchise’s identity, and the No. 99 reference keeps him at the center of the story. But the Yankees’ ceiling rises most when the roster’s strongest arms match the star power in the lineup. Cole and Fried together do that in a way a single hot streak or home run binge cannot, and that is why the first time they lined up side by side carried more significance than any one box score.
