Zelensky’s firing of defense minister sparks protests over drone war

Protests broke out in Kyiv after Volodymyr Zelensky dismissed Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, turning a personnel shake-up into a test of wartime leadership and military strategy. Soldiers, veterans and lawmakers pushed Zelensky to keep Fedorov’s vision of drone warfare intact, warning that Ukraine could lose momentum if political control and front-line innovation drifted apart.

The backlash came fast after the dismissal on or around July 16, 2026. Demonstrators gathered in the capital with signs reading “Hands off Fedorov” and “Stop sabotaging victory!”, while some accounts put the crowd at hundreds and others at thousands, reflecting rare public dissent in wartime Kyiv.

Fedorov had been widely credited with shaping Ukraine’s drone campaign against Russia, including long-range strikes deep inside Russian territory. That effort has become one of Kyiv’s most important asymmetric tools, and the dispute over his firing exposed a broader fight over how quickly Ukraine should modernize its armed forces.

The anger was not limited to the street. Reuters said soldiers, veterans and members of parliament criticized the move, and some framed it as a political crisis. Fedorov had also publicly accused Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrsky of blocking reforms, a charge that sharpened the perception that the battle was now as much about military bureaucracy as about battlefield tactics.

The concern among protesters was that replacing Fedorov could slow the drone program at a moment when it mattered most. One account cited a rate of 70% to 80% for Russian Shahed drones being shot down, a figure that underscored how central air defense and drone warfare had become to Ukraine’s survival. If that edge weakens, the effect would reach both the front line and civilian confidence at home.

Zelensky moved quickly to calm the fallout by naming a new acting defense chief, while Russia kept up air and port attacks on Ukraine. The timing added pressure on Kyiv: as Moscow sustained strikes, Zelensky was forced to show that the government could manage its military leadership without disrupting the country’s fastest-moving battlefield innovation.
