Bristol pickleball tournament raises mental health awareness through community play
Bristol’s first pickleball tournament turned Seymour Park into a public-stage fundraiser for mental health, drawing players, families and volunteers during Awareness Month.

Community Mental Health Affiliates staged its first-ever pickleball tournament in Bristol on Saturday, turning Seymour Park into a visible fundraiser for mental health awareness during May’s statewide and national observance month. Players of all skill levels mixed with volunteers, families and community supporters in a setting that was open, public and easy to reach, giving the event a different feel from a private club gathering.
The choice of pickleball fit the purpose. Christopher Porcher of CMHA said the sport works especially well for events like this because it is social and inclusive, welcoming kids, older adults and everyone in between. That accessibility matched the tournament’s tone, which was built around movement, connection, purpose and fun rather than a narrow competitive draw.
The event also showed how quickly pickleball has become a practical tool for community outreach. CMHA framed the tournament as a casual fundraiser meant to strengthen access to mental health and recovery services, making the action on court only part of the day’s value. At Seymour Park, the game served as a low-barrier entry point for people who might not attend a traditional fundraiser but will show up for a sport that is familiar, active and easy to join.

For amateur pickleball, Bristol offered a clear example of how public courts can become civic spaces with a broader mission. A first-time tournament, a community park setting and an all-ages format gave CMHA a way to tie mental health awareness to something people already recognize and enjoy. In a month devoted to the issue, the tournament made the case that pickleball can do more than fill schedules and nets. It can pull a community into the same space and turn play into support.
