Devilliers returns after stitches, helps Atlanta beat California Black Bears

Jay Devilliers was back on court less than 24 hours after taking a paddle to the head, and Atlanta needed every bit of it. After five stitches and a missed morning match against Team Australia, Devilliers returned Friday in Grand Rapids and helped the Atlanta Bouncers beat the California Black Bears 3-1 in the back draw of Major League Pickleball’s mid-season tournament.

The turnaround came in the middle of the Edward Jones MLP Mid-Season Tournament at Belknap Park, a July 8-12 event that brought together all 20 MLP teams plus Team Australia, Team Canada, Team Europe and the College All-Stars. The format is double elimination, and MLP’s own bracket makes the stakes plain: once a team drops into the back draw, the best possible finish after a main-draw loss is third place. For Atlanta, that meant the margin for error shrank immediately after Thursday’s loss to the Los Angeles Mad Drops.

That Thursday match featured the moment that sent Devilliers to the medical table. In mixed doubles against Jade Kawamoto and Ben Johns, Devilliers and Jessie Irvine both went for the same ball, and Irvine’s follow-through caught Devilliers in the side of the head. He needed a 15-minute medical timeout, then returned and finished the point set by closing out an 11-5 win in that game before Atlanta eventually lost in a DreamBreaker. Devilliers and Irvine are regular mixed-doubles partners, and Irvine is ranked by Pickleball.com as a top-five women’s pro player in all three women’s divisions.

Friday showed why Devilliers matters so much to Atlanta’s Challenger-level roster. The Bouncers beat Team Australia 3-0 in the morning without him, then later in the day handled the California Black Bears 3-1 to stay alive in the tournament. Major League Pickleball lists both Atlanta and California at the Challenger level, which makes every back-draw match a survival test rather than a cleanup round.

Devilliers had said the collision came from a poaching pattern he and Irvine were using, and that he was late to the ball that created the contact. The next match against Chicago was on deck for Saturday, and Atlanta’s path depended on whether Devilliers could keep turning a head injury and stitches into lineup stability at the exact moment the bracket got unforgiving.
