Stockton finally put shovels in the ground at Grupe Park on Monday, clearing the way for 10 dedicated pickleball courts at 5818 Cumberland Pl. The project is more than a repurposed corner of pavement: the city is removing the existing tennis courts and building a permanent pickleball facility, the first of its kind at a City park.

That matters because Stockton is not just adding lines and hoping for the best. The plan calls for 10 new asphalt-concrete courts, new fencing and new benches, with an alternate bid for a shade structure. The city’s timeline shows the work moving from community planning and feedback in March 2025 to final design plans in August 2025, then into construction from May through August 2026. The groundbreaking event was scheduled for 10 a.m. near the current tennis courts, giving players and neighbors a front-row look at a project that has been building for more than a year.

The bidding trail shows how seriously Stockton treated the conversion. Public works bid materials list the project as WP25033, due Jan. 22, 2026. The city received three bids on that date, then four more after the rebid on March 26. A California Environmental Quality Act notice filed April 29 described the scope plainly: remove the existing tennis courts and install 10 new permanent asphalt-concrete pickleball courts at Grupe Park. The city also says prevailing wages apply.

For players, the practical impact is simple. Grupe Park will give Stockton a dedicated pickleball site instead of relying on shared tennis space and temporary paint. Until the new courts open, the city says other marked pickleball courts are available at Atherton Park, Cruz Park, Harrell Park, Louis Park, Nelson Park, Panella Park, Sherwood Park, Sousa Park, Swenson Park, Valverde Park and Van Buskirk Park. Tennis players are pointed to Swenson Park during construction.

The project also reflects pressure from the ground up. In 2024, Grupe Park pickleball players formed a committee and went to Stockton City Council and Parks and Recreation asking for official courts. With construction now underway, Stockton is answering that demand with a permanent facility that should change where local amateurs play for years to come.
