Fishers Basketball Coach Garrett Winegar Departs for Iowa United Prep Staff

Garrett Winegar built one of Indiana's most dominant high school basketball programs over six seasons at Fishers, going 132-25 with an IHSAA Class 4A state championship, a state runner-up finish, and a Naismith national high school Coach of the Year nomination. On Monday, he told his team he was leaving.

Winegar, 34, is joining the coaching staff at Iowa United Prep in Des Moines, Iowa, where he will coach the freshman/sophomore group, known internally as the "Orange" team. He told Indianapolis Star reporter Kyle Neddenriep it was "a difficult decision to leave Fishers and Indiana (high school) basketball," but said the opportunity to coach on a national stage was appealing. Iowa United Prep competes in the Nike EYBL Scholastic circuit during the school year and on the Nike circuit in the summer, placing it among the most visible prep programs in the country.

The departure comes one day after Fishers closed out a 24-1 season, falling to Carmel 50-49 in the state finals. The Tigers finished the year ranked No. 1 in Indiana according to the 2025 High School Boys Basketball Massey Rankings.

At Iowa United Prep, Winegar will work alongside Keith Smart, the former Indiana University guard who hit the game-winning shot in the 1987 NCAA championship game and was named Most Outstanding Player of that Final Four. Smart, who most recently coached AJ Dybantsa at Utah Prep Academy, will lead the junior/senior "Black" team. Winegar said he may also assist with that group depending on the travel schedule.

The move was first reported by Jeff Rabjohns of Peegs.com on Monday evening and later confirmed by Neddenriep at the Indianapolis Star. Fishers High School is now searching for a new boys varsity head basketball coach.
