Churchill Downs is about to rewrite one of its oldest rituals. The 152nd Longines Kentucky Oaks will be run Friday, May 1, 2026, at 8 p.m. ET on NBC and Peacock, the first time the race for 3-year-old fillies has ever been presented in primetime.

That shift matters far beyond a new post time. The Oaks has long been the day-before-derby anchor of Derby Week, but the move to a nighttime slot will change the look and rhythm of the race day itself. Gates will open at 11 a.m. ET and the first race is set for 12:30 p.m. ET, creating a full day that now builds toward a prime-time finish rather than a late-afternoon crescendo. The track lighting, the national TV window and the evening crowd should give the event a different energy while keeping the Oaks at the center of Kentucky Derby week.

The race still brings the same heft. The Kentucky Oaks carries a $1.5 million purse and remains America’s premier race for 3-year-old fillies. The winner will still receive the signature Lilies for the Fillies garland, one of the most recognizable awards in horse racing. Churchill Downs says the Oaks is one of the longest-running sporting events in U.S. history, and the 2026 edition will put that history in front of a broader television audience than the race has ever had.

The new timing will also force horsemen to adjust to a less familiar race-day timeline. Trainers, jockeys and backstretch teams will have to keep fillies composed and ready through a much longer wait than the traditional late-afternoon Oaks, turning the day into a test of patience as much as preparation. That is a real change for a race built on precision, where every hour before post time shapes how a filly handles the main event.

The cultural centerpiece of Oaks Day stays intact. The Pink Out tradition will again frame the afternoon in support of breast cancer awareness, and the Kentucky Oaks Survivors Parade is scheduled for Friday, May 1, celebrating breast and ovarian cancer survivors and those still fighting their battle. Derby Week 2026 runs from April 25 through May 2, capped by the Kentucky Derby on Saturday, May 2, and the first night Oaks will give one of horse racing’s signature days a new national stage without letting go of its identity.
