Lagynos will try to make it five straight stakes victories when he steps into the $500,000 Wise Dan Stakes (G2T) at Churchill Downs on June 27. The son of Kantharos enters the race with back-to-back stakes wins at Churchill, and that home-track form makes him the horse everyone has to beat.

The setup is what makes the Wise Dan interesting. A nine-horse turf field gives the race the kind of traffic and pace variables that can alter a result in an instant, especially when a front-running pattern or a wide trip can turn a favorite’s edge into a problem. Lagynos already owns a Churchill profile that separates him from the rest of the group, but Dresden Row, Fort Washington, and six other turf runners give the race enough depth to keep it from becoming a simple formality.

His streak is the story inside the race.
