Hong Kong launches World Cup pickleball team selection tournament

Hong Kong is not treating World Cup team selection like a quick tryout. It is building a pathway, and the scale of it tells the story: 266 players are attached to the Pickleball World Cup 2026 Hong Kong, China Representative Team Selection Tournament, a formal launchpad for the city’s push toward Vietnam and the next international stage.

The tournament runs from June 6 through June 27, 2026 at tmtplaza, officially Tuen Mun Town Plaza, in Tuen Mun. Registration opened on May 8 at 6:00 p.m. HKT and closed on May 19 at 6:00 p.m. HKT, a tight window that underscored how structured the process has become. This is not a loose open call for a handful of hopefuls. It is a controlled selection event run by the Hong Kong, China Tennis Association, which says its aim is to promote the growth of pickleball in Hong Kong and to make the sport accessible from children to seniors.

The format shows how Hong Kong wants to build depth, not just identify one headline pair. Men’s doubles and women’s doubles are offered across Open, Senior 50+, Master 60+ and Junior U18 divisions. The Open, Senior and Master categories are set for June 6, June 7 and June 13, while the junior division is scheduled for June 27. That spread matters. It means the city is trying to evaluate a broader national pool across age groups, not simply chase the strongest immediate result.

That approach carries extra weight because Hong Kong, China won a historic silver medal at the 2025 Pickleball World Cup. A one-off trial model might have been enough for a team trying to get on the map. Hong Kong is acting like a program that expects to stay there. The June selection tournament sits inside a wider ecosystem that also includes community open days, weekly play sessions and school outreach, with the broader effort expected to reach more than 8,000 participants.

The venue choice fits the same logic. Tmtplaza, the flagship shopping centre in the northwestern New Territories, sits beside a major transport hub and houses more than 350 stores, giving pickleball maximum visibility in public space instead of burying it inside a private-club lane. The Pickleball Association of Hong Kong, China says it is affiliated to the Asia Federation of Pickleball and the International Federation of Pickleball, and its mission includes coach and referee training, youth development and athlete cultivation for international events. HKCTA’s rules also leave room for a title sponsor, another sign that this is being handled like a serious, marketable representative program.
