Roller freestyle champion sparks debate with Colosseum skate video

Nicoly Machado turned a quick skate beside Rome’s Colosseum into a broader argument about where elite roller freestyle belongs. The Brazilian rider, whose Instagram profile calls her “Campeã mundial Bowl 2024” and shows about 496K followers, was described by World Skate as the former 2024 Roller Freestyle champion.

The setting is part of why the clip spread so fast. Colle Oppio Skatepark sits just opposite the Colosseum, and World Skate has already staged Roller Freestyle Street Championships there with the monument in full view. Rome has also used the same backdrop for major roller-sports moments, including the 2024 World Skate Games in Italy, before World Skate said the world championship would move from Rome to Sakai, Japan in 2025.

The video drew admiration for Machado’s control, but the reaction also turned to risk. The Colosseum zone is one of the most crowded tourist corridors in the city, packed with pedestrians, e-scooters and traffic, and critics argued that a skating run through that space is not the same as a controlled contest inside a skatepark. That distinction matters in Rome, where officials have spent the past few years tightening rules around micromobility and historic areas.

Rome introduced new e-scooter safety rules from January 2023, and one summary of the policy said adults needed ID to rent scooters while speed limits were set at 20 kilometers per hour. Italy later moved to enforce helmets and insurance for e-scooter riders after a rise in accidents, a response that underlines how quickly transport and safety questions escalate in dense urban sites. In a city where even small vehicles have become a regulatory problem, a fast-moving skate clip through a heritage district was always likely to invite scrutiny.

The Colosseum also carries a low tolerance for behavior that officials see as disrespectful or reckless. Italian authorities previously vowed to punish a tourist filmed vandalizing the monument in 2023, a reminder that the site is treated as both a landmark and a protected public space. Machado’s video landed at the intersection of performance, visibility and restraint, the same line elite skaters and creators keep navigating when they choose iconic places as their stage.
