The Houston Astros signed veteran catcher Christian Vázquez to a minor-league contract with an invitation to big-league Spring Training, a move that injects experienced depth into a catching group that remains unsettled behind starter Yainer Díaz. Vázquez, 35, is currently representing Team Puerto Rico in the World Baseball Classic and is expected to report to Astros camp once his international duties conclude.

The deal, announced March 7, contains an invite to Houston’s big-league camp and carries financial upside if Vázquez is added to the 40-man roster: he "would get a $1 million base salary while in the major leagues if added to the 40-man roster and would have the chance to earn performance bonuses." The contract structure gives the Astros low-cost flexibility to evaluate Vázquez without a major commitment.

Houston’s internal competition at catcher now includes Vázquez and Carlos Pérez, who is in camp on a minor-league deal and has not appeared in the majors since 2023. The signing signals continued uncertainty about the backup role behind Yainer Díaz. MLBTR observed, "The fact that the Astros are making this signing indicates they aren’t entirely satisfied with their current backup catching situation, and there’s no risk for the club in committing just a minor league deal to Vazquez to take a look at him in camp."

Timing complicates Vázquez’s path. MLBTR cautioned, "Vazquez’s WBC duties leave him with relatively little time to make an impression in Spring Training, but obviously the Astros have some familiarity with what Vazquez brings to the table." With his arrival delayed until after Puerto Rico’s WBC schedule, Vázquez will have a compressed Grapefruit League window to showcase handler and pitch-framing work for Houston’s staff.

Vázquez brings postseason résumé and defensive chops to the evaluation. He won World Series rings with Boston in 2018 and with Houston in 2022 and was behind the plate for the combined no-hitter in Game 4 of the 2022 World Series. Offensively, recent production has dipped: in 2025 he hit .189 with three home runs and 14 RBIs, and Heavy summarized his three-year stint with Minnesota at .215/.267/.311. Defensively, Heavy reported Vázquez posted +5 Defensive Runs Saved in 2025 and "continues to grade well in blocking and throwing metrics," adding that "That defensive reliability could give Vázquez a legitimate path back onto the Astros’ roster."

For the Astros, the signing is a low-risk, familiar option: a veteran catcher with championship experience, a modest 2025 offensive line, and measurable defensive value. Vázquez’s late arrival after the WBC will determine how much of that value he can show in camp as Houston evaluates backup options before finalizing its roster plans.
