Athletics option Max Muncy to Triple-A after Nick Kurtz returns

The Athletics optioned Max Muncy to Triple-A Las Vegas on July 25 after reinstating Nick Kurtz from the injured list, another turn in a month of roster churn that has repeatedly reshaped the club’s infield. Kurtz came back from the 10-day IL and then went 0-for-4 with four strikeouts in Minnesota as the Athletics dropped a 2-0 decision, a flat return on the one-year anniversary of his historic four-homer game.

For Muncy, the move is more than a transaction. He had already been optioned to Las Vegas on July 8, and that move lined up with Tyler Soderstrom’s return from injury, making Muncy the odd man out as the Athletics sorted through their depth. The significance is larger than a reserve getting squeezed, because Muncy opened the season as the Athletics’ third baseman, a role that carried regular major-league responsibility before the club began cycling through roster fixes.

That is why everyday at-bats in Las Vegas matter now. The Triple-A schedule can give the Athletics a cleaner read on whether Muncy’s swing decisions hold up when he is seeing pitchers multiple times a week, rather than in short big-league bursts. It can also show whether the defense at third base is steady enough to keep him in the infield mix, or whether his best path back is tied to a different usage pattern altogether. In other words, Las Vegas is not just a holding spot. It is the place where the Athletics can determine whether Muncy looks like a fixed part of the roster or a player whose value depends on matchup-based usage.

The timing also changes the rest of the Triple-A club’s playing-time picture. Muncy’s return adds a bat with major-league experience to Las Vegas, but it also forces the staff to sort out how often he plays third, how often he rotates through the lineup, and which infield reps are available for everyone else. With Brian Serven having already been recalled when Kurtz went on the 10-day IL on July 13 with a right thumb capsule sprain, Las Vegas has spent much of the month as a staging ground for the Athletics’ constant promotions and demotions. Now it gets Muncy back, and with it a direct chance to answer the question the big league club is still asking about him.
