Cubs send Jordan Wicks back to Triple-A Iowa after injury return
Jordan Wicks was back on the Cubs’ active roster for a day, then sent to Iowa, a clear sign Chicago still sees him as depth rather than an immediate rotation fix.
Jordan Wicks’ return from the injured list came with a catch that says a lot about where he stands right now: the Cubs activated the 25-year-old left-hander on May 16 and optioned him to Triple-A Iowa the same day. That is not the move of a club ready to hand him a big-league job. It is a move built around coverage, caution and one simple truth, the Cubs still want Wicks available, but they are not ready to force him into the Chicago rotation.
Wicks had been working back from left forearm and elbow inflammation that knocked him out during spring training, then spent the next stretch rebuilding at Iowa. His rehab assignment began April 18, and the results were mixed enough to explain why Chicago kept the leash short. In 21.1 innings with Iowa, Wicks posted a 5.48 ERA and 1.78 WHIP with 18 strikeouts and 10 walks. The stuff has been there in bursts, but the command numbers still leave room for the Cubs to ask for more before they make him part of the Wrigley equation.

That is the crux of the story. Wicks is not being sent down as a punishment so much as a checkpoint. Chicago has used him as both a starter and reliever, and that versatility still gives him a path back if injuries keep piling up or if a rotation opening finally appears. The Cubs saw him make eight major league relief appearances in 2025, when he worked to a 6.28 ERA with 13 strikeouts and just one walk. That is the profile of a pitcher who can help in a pinch, but only if the club believes the current version can handle a meaningful role.
The timing matters because the Cubs’ pitching staff is already stretched elsewhere. Matthew Boyd is recovering from a left meniscus injury that required surgery in Chicago on May 7, and his return is now being projected for late June or early July. He even threw lightly off a mound on May 16, with a bullpen session possible the week of May 18. Justin Steele remains in elbow rehab, and Cade Horton’s season-ending elbow surgery has thinned the pipeline further.
So Wicks is back in Iowa, but not far from the next call. For a club juggling injuries and innings, that makes his next outing matter more than a routine Triple-A assignment usually does.
