Diamondbacks Option Infielder Jose Fernández to Triple-A Reno
Jose Fernández led Arizona's spring camp with three home runs and a 1.148 OPS, then got optioned to Triple-A Reno anyway.

Jose Fernández put up the best spring numbers in the Arizona Diamondbacks' camp, then packed his bags for Reno. The 22-year-old Venezuelan infielder was optioned to Triple-A on March 8 as the Diamondbacks trimmed their major-league roster to 47 players, with Opening Day at Dodger Stadium set for March 26 still requiring another cut to 26.
Fernández led Arizona's Cactus League hitters with three home runs this spring and posted a 1.148 OPS, numbers that stood out given how quietly he entered camp. He was not ranked highly on national prospect lists heading into spring training and had never played above Double-A, yet he consistently made hard contact and showed the ability to handle multiple infield positions. Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com noted that Fernández "turned heads this spring" despite being "under the radar entering camp."
The move sends Fernández to Triple-A for the first time in his career. He spent all of 2025 at Double-A Amarillo, slashing .272/.321/.454 with 17 home runs and 12 steals across 510 plate appearances, before being added to Arizona's 40-man roster over the winter. That winter addition itself was considered a surprise by many following the organization.
Scouting coverage describes Fernández as an average defender at shortstop, with a potential shift to third base possible further down the road. His offensive profile, however, has not drawn skepticism. The spring performance only reinforced what his 2025 Double-A numbers suggested: a bat that plays at higher levels.
Fernández was one of five players optioned to Triple-A Reno in the same round of moves, joining pitchers Mitch Bratt, Juan Burgos, Kohl Drake, and Grant Holman. Ten additional players were reassigned to minor-league camp, including outfielder Ryan Waldschmidt and infielder Tommy Troy, two other names Diamondbacks observers had been tracking closely this spring.
With 21 players still to shed before Opening Day, Fernández's path back to the 40-man roster runs through a Reno lineup that will now get its first look at one of Arizona's more intriguing young infielders.
