Colt Emerson supplied the early jolt and Dane Dunning supplied the stability, and that combination was enough for Tacoma to take the opener from Sugar Land 8-6 Wednesday night at Cheney Stadium.

Emerson opened the scoring with a first-inning home run, his seventh of the season, and Tacoma never lost the initiative after jumping in front 3-0. The 20-year-old Seattle Mariners first-round pick finished 2-for-4 with four RBI and a run scored, a line that matched his most RBI in a game since he drove in four for High-A Everett on May 15, 2025. The homer left his bat at 101.6 mph and extended his hitting streak to five games, a stretch in which he ranked tied for the Pacific Coast League lead in runs scored and fourth in RBI.

Tacoma needed more than Emerson to build enough separation, and Brock Rodden and Ryan Bliss delivered extra traffic on the bases and in the box. Rodden lined an RBI double, his 13th double of the season, while Bliss added a multi-hit night and stole second for his 77th career stolen base as a Rainier, moving him into fourth place on Tacoma’s all-time franchise list. Emerson added another hit and Bliss drove in a run again in the eighth, giving Tacoma insurance before the late innings tightened.

Dunning made sure the early cushion held. He worked five scoreless innings, allowing only two hits and one walk while striking out four in his first scoreless start of the season. Sugar Land did not break through until the sixth, when Kellen Strahm doubled and James Nelson followed with an RBI groundout, but Tacoma’s bullpen kept the response controlled. Robinson Ortiz threw 2.0 perfect innings and lowered his season ERA to 1.76, then Cole Wilcox retired the side in order in the ninth to close it out.

The win moved Tacoma to 19-22 and left Sugar Land at 19-22 as well, keeping the clubs level in the Pacific Coast League standings after one game of the series. For Tacoma, the night was about more than the final score: Emerson’s bat looked like a difference-maker again, and Dunning gave the Rainiers the kind of mound credibility that lets a lineup’s best days stand up through the finish.
