Giants place hot-hitting Daniel Susac on IL, select Eric Haase from Sacramento
Daniel Susac’s elbow injury stripped San Francisco of one of its steadiest early bats and pushed veteran Eric Haase onto the active roster just before the Dodgers series.

Daniel Susac’s hot start hit a pause when the Giants placed the catcher on the 10-day injured list with right elbow ulnar neuritis and recalled veteran Eric Haase from Triple-A Sacramento. The move, retroactive to April 20, came as San Francisco prepared to open a series against the Los Angeles Dodgers, raising the stakes for a roster decision built as much on defensive trust as on urgency.
Susac is expected to miss about two to three weeks, a significant setback for a lineup that had leaned on him as one of its more consistent early contributors. The elbow problem first surfaced during the Washington Nationals series, and manager Tony Vitello said it did not appear to stem from one specific throw. Instead, the issue seemed to develop over time, which makes the injury especially frustrating for a player who had been giving the Giants steady production at a time when the offense needed it.
Haase’s call-up gives the Giants an experienced backstop behind Patrick Bailey, who remains the club’s primary catcher. The 33-year-old Haase was the choice over Jesus Rodriguez, a sign that San Francisco wanted a proven major league catcher for the immediate stretch rather than another young option learning on the job. FanGraphs noted that with Andrew Knizner and Sam Huff both gone, Haase is the only catcher on the roster with significant major league experience, a detail that underscores why the Giants moved quickly to get him in the mix.
That experience matters most in a week like this, when every game against Los Angeles carries extra weight and every inning behind the plate can shape how the staff handles a demanding series. Susac’s absence leaves a real hole in the organization’s catching depth, but it also clarifies the Giants’ priorities: keep Bailey supported, protect the pitching staff, and trust Haase to absorb the workload without forcing the club to rush a younger catcher into a role he may not be ready for. For now, the Giants are trading some of Susac’s offensive momentum for stability behind the plate.
