Guardians Optioned Jhonkensy Noel to Triple-A, Recall Johnathan Rodríguez Before Astros
Guardians sent Jhonkensy Noel to Triple-A Columbus to reset his season and recalled Johnathan Rodríguez for immediate playing time in right field against the Astros.

The Cleveland Guardians optioned outfielder Jhonkensy Noel to Triple-A Columbus and recalled Johnathan Rodríguez ahead of Sunday’s series finale against the Houston Astros, a move designed to give Noel regular at-bats and get Rodríguez streaks of playing time.
Noel’s demotion comes after a rough offensive start. The 23-year-old entered the move with a .146/.168/.223 slash line, two homers, nine RBIs, three walks and 34 strikeouts in 46 games. The slump sharpened in May, when Noel went 5-for-48 (.104) with 18 strikeouts over 23 games. The Guardians had frequently used Noel in a platoon role in right field, where he started 23 times while Nolan Jones started 32, and Cleveland has faced 49 right-handed starters versus 18 lefties this season, limiting Noel’s matchups.
Manager Stephen Vogt framed the option as a chance for Noel to work and recalibrate. “It just hasn't been the start to the season that he would've liked or that we would've liked,” Vogt said. “And for me, Jhonkensy [needs to] just go play, go relax, get back to being you. There's some adjustments that need to be made, obviously, but I think in Jhonkensy's case, we know how good of a player he is. I mean, he plays an unbelievable right field. He's a good base runner, and he has the power to hit the ball out of the yard. It just hasn't been there yet this year.” Vogt later added that Noel had been working and that the timing of upcoming left-handed opponents created an opportunity for Rodríguez to see consecutive days in the lineup: “We asked him to really work and he bought in and he’s been working on it … We’re going into a stretch of facing some left-handed pitchers in the next few days, so it gives Jonathan an opportunity to get a couple days in a row of playing time to get his feet wet and jump right in.”
Rodríguez was inserted into Sunday’s right field start after a strong Triple-A run. The Guardians’ No. 12 prospect hit .324/.408/.494 with seven home runs, 32 RBIs, 23 walks and 48 strikeouts in 46 games for Columbus, compiling a .902 OPS. Rodríguez, who made Cleveland’s Opening Day roster but was optioned on April 8 after five at-bats in four games, emphasized approach over power through a translator: “Yeah, it's just a matter of competing, have more of a competitive advantage, I feel. To me, homers are not a priority, it's just a result of the type of AB you have. So for me, if I was able to have a good competitive AB and then [the results are whatever they are].” He also worked on his timing “between his hands and his legs” in Triple-A to be more comfortable at the plate.
Noel’s track record makes this a reset rather than an exit. He slugged 13 homers in 67 regular-season games as a rookie last year and drilled the score-tying home run in Game 3 of the ALCS against the New York Yankees, a blast described as one of the loudest in franchise history. For fans and roster watchers, the move signals the Guardians balancing long-term upside with short-term lineup needs: Rodriguez’s hot Triple-A bat and the lefty-heavy pitching slate pushed the change, while Noel heads to Columbus to regain timing and plate discipline. What to watch next is Noel’s contact rate and strike zone adjustment in Columbus, and whether Rodríguez can parlay regular at-bats into a sustained major-league role.
