Jon Heyman of the New York Post bluntly framed the immediate outlook: “Barring something unforeseen (an injury perhaps?), Jasson Domínguez looks to be ticketed for Triple-A Scranton Wilkes-Barre.” The 22-year-old outfielder has told reporters the opening-day destination is “beyond his control” as spring training approaches, placing a once-hyped prospect at the center of a high-stakes roster puzzle.

That puzzle is both personnel and performance driven. The Yankees locked down center field when Trent Grisham accepted the qualifying offer, and the club’s splash signing of Cody Bellinger to a 5-year, $162.5 million contract has narrowed opportunities in left. GM Brian Cashman framed the front office position succinctly: “If everything stays the same, we’ll be forced to determine what’s our best course of action to help this team be impactful.” Manager Aaron Boone reminded observers of roster fluidity: “We have a long time to go between now and the first Spring Training game, and certainly Opening Day. You never know what’s going to come down the pike.”

Domínguez’s 2025 production and recent track record help explain the caution. In the majors last year he hit .257 with 10 home runs, 47 RBIs and a .719 OPS, but his playing time cratered after July, leaving him with just 72 at-bats the rest of the season. In the minors he showed mixed signs: a 109-game Somerset line of .254/.367/.414 with 15 homers, 66 RBIs and 37 steals, and a brief Triple-A stint in which he went 13-for-31 (.419) in nine games with three doubles, one triple, 10 RBIs and three stolen bases. MLB.com noted the Yankees added the switch-hitting outfielder to the 40-man roster to protect him from the Rule 5 draft and that he batted fifth and played center in his big-league debut, a moment Domínguez said through an interpreter was special: “I think it's going to be a very special moment, when you look back and I see where I've come from, where I was born, the journey to get here.”

Projections and depth charts supply additional context for a Triple-A opening. Pinstripealley summarized ZiPS projections that peg Domínguez for 471 plate appearances and a .246/.323/.399 triple-slash in 2026, while FanGraphs’ depth charts were described as very pessimistic about his playing-time share. The analytic voice in Pinstripealley also flagged that there’s “not yet a precedent for Domínguez slugging higher than .400 in a full MLB season,” even as some human evaluators believe a .450 slugging percentage is reasonable. Injuries remain the key X-factor; Pinstripealley stressed that both injuries to Yankees starters and to Domínguez himself could swing roster decisions.

Domínguez’s role will also be contested by internal options and trade-market chatter. Spencer Jones had been a left-field competitor before Bellinger’s arrival; Amed Rosario and Oswaldo Cabrera are viable bench alternatives, with Cabrera’s experience in both left and right field cited as an edge. The Yankees reportedly considered Domínguez a potential trade chip over the offseason even as they kept him on the 40-man roster.

Spring training performance and unforeseen developments remain decisive. If roster composition “stays the same,” as Cashman warned, Domínguez will likely begin in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and wait for a call-up driven by injury, trade movement, or a standout camp showing that forces the Yankees to alter plans.
