Kristian Campbell's path back to Boston runs through Worcester again. The Red Sox optioned the 23-year-old to their Triple-A affiliate Saturday morning, a move first reported by MassLive's Chris Cotillo, ending any remaining uncertainty about where Campbell would begin the 2026 season.

The decision came after a spring in which Campbell hit .220/.304/.341 across 18 Grapefruit League games, posting a .645 OPS with just 2 walks against 11 strikeouts in 46 plate appearances. That 23.9 percent strikeout rate did little to strengthen his case for a roster spot, and the Red Sox already carry a crowded outfield that includes Jarren Duran, Wilyer Abreu, Ceddanne Rafaela, and Masataka Yoshida.

The option closes a difficult chapter that began with genuine promise. Campbell made Boston's Opening Day roster in 2025 after a standout spring, and the Red Sox signed him to an eight-year, $60 million extension just one week into his big-league career. He rewarded that investment early, batting .301/.407/.495 through April. Then his slash line cratered to .222/.319/.345, and Boston demoted him in June. He never returned to the majors.

His 73 games with the WooSox after that demotion produced a .382 on-base percentage and 8 home runs, but a 26.3 percent strikeout rate and a .144 ISO offered little momentum heading into this spring. That ISO figure represented a notable step back from the .200 he posted at the same Triple-A level in 2024.

Defensively, Campbell's struggles in the majors were significant enough to prompt a position change. His minus-16 Defensive Runs Saved at second base ranked as the worst mark of any American League fielder at any position, according to NESN. The Red Sox responded by giving him outfield reps, and that shift continued throughout Grapefruit League play.

In Worcester, Campbell is expected to play every day with the outfield as his primary focus. The organization views the assignment as developmental rather than punitive, with regular at-bats intended to sharpen his swing and accelerate his adjustment to the new defensive position. The $60 million extension makes clear that Boston still sees him as a long-term piece; the WooSox assignment is the price of getting there.
