Rochester ballpark to be renamed ESL Ballpark under 10-year deal
Rochester's downtown ballpark will be renamed ESL Ballpark under a 10-year naming-rights deal; new revenue and signage are set to reshape the Red Wings' home ahead of Opening Day.

A decade-long naming-rights agreement will change the name of Rochester's downtown ballpark to ESL Ballpark, a move officials say brings a meaningful revenue boost and renewed corporate proximity to the Red Wings. The Red Wings, Monroe County and ESL Federal Credit Union announced the partnership during a morning press conference Feb. 10, and new signage has already been attached inside the clubhouse.
The partnership was presented as both a commercial pact and a community endorsement. Monroe County Executive Adam Bello said, "It speaks to who we are as a community. The Red Wings are synonymous with Rochester. What we call their home should also be synonymous with Rochester." Naomi Silver, president, CEO and COO of Rochester Community Baseball, Inc., framed the naming as values-driven: "ESL Ballpark represents everything we value about baseball in Rochester, community, tradition, and long-term commitment. ESL has been a trusted partner of the Red Wings for many years, and having an institution founded by George Eastman take on the naming rights of our home is both meaningful and humbling. This is not just a name on a building; it’s a reflection of shared values and a deep belief in the people of this community."
Fiscal specifics reported in a memorandum of understanding describe a substantially larger payment than previous deals. WXXI reported the MOU would pay Monroe County $550,000 in the first year with a 2 percent increase each year, and includes options to renew every four or five years through 2056. That escalation structure would put future annual payments far above earlier agreements, when Frontier Communications paid about $275,000 per year and Innovative Solutions paid roughly $298,000 per year. County Legislator John Baynes emphasized the need for outside partners, saying, "That's important, because this facility, is owned by the taxpayers, and for it to be sustainable, we need partners. We can't continue to go to the tax levy to support every amenity that exists, whether it's the zoo or here."
Coverage of the deal moved through a quick timeline. The press conference and the attached signage were documented in the morning report; later that evening Spectrum News updated its story to report the Monroe County Legislature gave its blessing to the name change, with only one legislator, Rachel Barnhart, voting no because of the limited time allowed for review.

The renaming revives the ballpark's naming chronology: it opened in 1996 as Frontier Field, became Innovative Field in 2022, and now will operate as ESL Ballpark. ESL is Rochester-based and was founded by George Eastman in 1920; the credit union operates dozens of branches across upstate New York.
For fans, the change matters both symbolically and practically. The Red Wings are scheduled to open at home March 31 against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, and renderings and photos show the ESL Ballpark signage already placed in the clubhouse. Economically, the reported escalation and longer term shift the calculus for Monroe County, reducing immediate reliance on taxpayer support while tying a local institution's name to a century-old financial cooperative. The next steps for confirmation include release of the signed MOU and formal implementation details on branding, ticketing and how those funds will be allocated in county budgets, all of which will determine how quickly fans see ESL Ballpark reflected on scoreboards, merchandise and season promotions.
