Carson Palmquist's spring training ended on March 8 with a ticket back to Albuquerque, the Colorado Rockies optioning their No. 7 prospect per MLB Pipeline to Triple-A after a shin injury disrupted his preparation and his early-season numbers failed to justify a roster spot.

The 25-year-old had been behind schedule throughout camp after a line drive struck him on the shin during his Cactus League debut, setting back his planned progression. He recovered to make a couple of appearances, pitching last Sunday and Thursday, but the injury had already cost him valuable ramp-up time. The setback was not considered serious and Palmquist was expected to be fine, though his preparation schedule was notably delayed.

The performance numbers framing the move are difficult to ignore. Across seven starts in two stints with Colorado this season, Palmquist posted a 0-4 record with a 7.63 ERA, a 1.728 WHIP, and 22 strikeouts against 18 walks in 30.2 innings. He surrendered eight home runs and 26 earned runs. Those struggles follow an equally rough introduction to the majors last season, when he produced an 8.91 ERA with a 27:25 strikeout-to-walk ratio across nine appearances.

Roster construction factored into the timing as much as performance. Kyle Freeland, working his way back from a back injury, was expected to return from the 15-day injured list to reclaim a rotation spot, according to a report from Patrick Lyons of JustBaseball.com cited by CBS Sports. In a corresponding move, the Rockies recalled Angel Chivilli, who carries a 6.14 ERA across 20 appearances this season and gave up three earned runs in just 0.1 innings in his last MLB outing against the New York Yankees on May 24.

Palmquist was not the only arm Colorado sent down. Welinton Herrera and Luis Peralta were also optioned to Triple-A as the Rockies sorted through their spring pitching decisions. In the rotation competition, Antonio Senzatela built a case for the fifth starter role with a 1.80 ERA through five innings and three scoreless frames for Team Venezuela in the World Baseball Classic. Ryan Feltner struggled at 11.81 across 5.1 innings, while Chase Dollander showed enough promise in 7.0 innings with a 2.57 ERA to suggest he needs only more development time rather than a roster overhaul.

For Palmquist, Triple-A Albuquerque represents a chance to iron out the mechanical and command issues that have defined his early MLB experience. His strikeout rate has not been dominant enough to offset a walk rate that undermines his effectiveness, and pitching at Coors Field adds an unforgiving backdrop to any control lapses. The expectation around the organization is that he will move between Albuquerque and Denver as the season unfolds, with his long-term ceiling as a rotation piece still intact despite the rough early returns.
