Royals Option Bergert, Black, Misner, Rave to Triple-A Omaha
Bergert surrendered five home runs in 9.2 spring innings but projects as Omaha's ace and Kansas City's first rotation call-up when injuries strike.

The Kansas City Royals optioned right-handers Ryan Bergert and Mason Black along with outfielders Kameron Misner and John Rave to Triple-A Omaha on Tuesday evening, clearing significant space as the club works toward a 26-man Opening Day roster by March 27.
Bergert's assignment was the most consequential of the four moves. He spent the spring competing for the fifth starter's spot but posted a 6.52 ERA across four Cactus League starts, surrendering five home runs in 9.2 innings while walking three and striking out eight. His command metrics told the deeper story: a 38.5 percent HR/FB rate and a 43.5 percent zone rate, according to RoyalsKeep. Yet his stuff drew notice throughout camp, with his 102 TJ Stuff+ ranking fourth among all Royals pitchers this spring. The Royals opted to keep him stretched out as a starter in Omaha rather than squeeze him into a bullpen role, and he projects as the Storm Chasers' top starter to open the year.
The Bergert decision effectively locked in the rotation. Cole Ragans was named the Opening Day starter for March 27 against the Atlanta Braves, with Kris Bubic, Michael Wacha, Seth Lugo, and Noah Cameron expected to fill out the five-man group. The club has not announced an official order beyond Ragans. Cameron, who posted a 2.99 ERA across 24 starts last season and finished among the best American League rookies, is the likely fifth starter.
Bailey Falter's role remains the one unresolved piece. Rather than starting the Cactus League game against the Dodgers at Surprise Stadium as originally scheduled, Falter came out of the bullpen for his three allotted innings. He acknowledged the shift directly. "They told me I'd have the swingman role out of the bullpen, told me I could be in there for anywhere from two innings to five innings," Falter said. "They didn't really fill me in on it too much other than that, but my job is to take the ball whenever they call on me, and I plan on doing that." Kansas City has discussed opening with a six-man rotation where Falter works out of the bullpen for the Atlanta series and slides into a sixth-starter slot when the Royals play 12 consecutive games before their next off-day on April 13.
Bergert carries real upside as Omaha depth. Last season he started 15 games between San Diego and Kansas City, posting a 3.66 ERA with a 1.26 WHIP and a 73:35 strikeout-to-walk ratio across 76.1 innings. His numbers dropped to a 4.43 ERA in eight starts after arriving in Kansas City, but the Royals view him as their primary rotation insurance. The 2025 season reinforced that need: Ragans, Bubic, and Lugo all missed time with significant injuries.
Black's option made statistical sense despite strong spring results. Acquired from the San Francisco Giants this offseason, Black did not allow a run across six Cactus League appearances and held opponents to a .172 batting average in eight innings. The moves simply reflected the surplus of pitching in camp rather than any performance concern.
The outfield decisions came down to roster math. Starling Marte's acquisition this spring made Misner and Rave expendable. Neither hit particularly well in Arizona, with Misner posting a .226 average and Rave a .231 mark. Kansas City's outfield group now includes Jac Caglianone, Isaac Collins, Kyle Isbel, Lane Thomas, and Marte. Left-hander Helcris Oliváres was also assigned to minor-league camp. He showed a 77.8 percent groundball rate in spring, ranking in the 99th percentile, but needs more development time, likely with Omaha.
A subsequent move Wednesday put the big-league roster at 49, when right-hander Mitch Spence was also optioned to Triple-A. The Royals still need to cut to 26 before Opening Day, with roster spots at the back of the bullpen and bench still being contested by utility players Nick Loftin, Tyler Tolbert, and Josh Rojas.
