Tigers fire Gabe Alvarez from Toledo, Mike Hessman named interim manager
Gabe Alvarez was fired for a club-policy violation, leaving Toledo with Mike Hessman as interim manager and an abrupt jolt to Detroit’s Triple-A development pipeline.

Detroit’s move sent an immediate shock through Toledo’s development machine, where Gabe Alvarez had been tasked with preparing the next wave of Tigers prospects and Mike Hessman now takes over as interim manager. The change cuts into the continuity the organization built around a 2026 staff that was finalized in February, with Alvarez lined up to return alongside Hessman, pitching coach Doug Bochtler and hitting coach Francisco Contreras.
The Tigers said Alvarez was terminated for a violation of club policy, but the organization did not explain what happened. The club confirmed the dismissal by email and said it had no further comment. The Toledo Mud Hens declined to comment and referred questions back to Detroit, leaving the abrupt firing as a managerial and developmental disruption rather than a fully explained public case.

Alvarez had opened the 2025 season as Toledo’s manager, replacing Tim Federowicz. He guided the Mud Hens to an 84-66 record and a third-place finish in the International League West, and Detroit had already announced on February 2 that he would return for a second season in Toledo and his fifth as a manager in the organization. For a Triple-A club built to feed Detroit, that made the firing especially consequential: the manager who was supposed to shepherd prospects through another season is now gone before the roster’s next stretch of evaluation and adjustment.
The move also derails a path that had pointed toward a longer stay in the Tigers’ coaching ladder. Alvarez arrived in Toledo after three successful seasons managing the Erie SeaWolves, where he posted a 232-178 record, won three division titles, led Erie to the franchise’s first two league championships and was named Eastern League Manager of the Year in 2023. Before that, he had already been part of the Mud Hens’ history as a player from 1998 to 2000. He began managing Toledo on Opening Day 2025 and was the 12th manager at Fifth Third Field and the 60th in Toledo baseball history.

Hessman’s promotion keeps a familiar face in the chair. He was already Toledo’s hitting coach, and his name is on the wall at Fifth Third Field for a reason: he is the all-time home run leader in affiliated minor league baseball with 433 homers and was inducted into the International League Hall of Fame in 2018. For a clubhouse trying to keep development on track, the Tigers have turned to one of the most recognizable figures in the organization to steady the group after a jarring midstream reset.
