Alan Roden impressed enough in Fort Myers to genuinely compete for the starting left-field job. It wasn't enough to keep him in Minneapolis.

The Minnesota Twins optioned Roden to Triple-A St. Paul on Sunday after a 7-3 Spring Training win over the Atlanta Braves, a move that settled the club's outfield picture heading into Opening Day. Roden had a strong camp, but roster construction made the decision for the front office: Roden carries Minor League options, James Outman does not, so Outman stays and Roden heads to the Saints.

Outman will slot in as a starting corner outfielder against right-handed pitching and serve as a backup to Byron Buxton in center. He is also expected to split time in left with Austin Martin, who brings additional positional flexibility as someone who can play center and second base. Outman's spring numbers give Minnesota reason for optimism: two homers, six walks, and seven stolen bases, along with what the organization describes as an exemplary defensive reputation.

Martin had missed time during camp due to a concussion but came through his first game back without issue, clearing what had been a minor concern for the Twins' outfield depth.

Trevor Larnach also secured his Opening Day roster spot with the transaction, finalizing what had been the team's most unsettled position group heading into the final days of Spring Training.

Manager Shelton offered a preview of what the Opening Day lineup could look like on Sunday, placing Buxton in the two-hole rather than his usual leadoff spot. The thinking is deliberate: hitting second gives Buxton a chance to drive in runs early while also increasing the likelihood he comes up with runners already on base. Luke Keaschall drew the leadoff assignment in that game, though Shelton has not locked in the top spot. Brooks Lee is expected to start at shortstop when the regular season begins.

Roden, who turns 26 this season, will get consistent playing time in St. Paul as he waits for his next opportunity with the big league club.
