Jonathan Cannon arrived at spring training competing for a rotation spot. He left it bound for Charlotte.

The Chicago White Sox optioned the 25-year-old right-hander to Triple-A Charlotte on March 17, ending his bid to crack the Opening Day roster as the organization finalized its season-opening pitching staff. Manager Will Venable acknowledged improvements in Cannon's pitch count leverage and running game during camp but cited five established starters ahead of him in the rotation battle.

Those five are Shane Smith, Sean Burke, Anthony Kay, Davis Martin, and Erick Fedde. Smith is set to start the March 26 opener against the Milwaukee Brewers, a decision the White Sox announced weeks ago. Fedde, per CBS Sports, is poised to begin the campaign in the rotation alongside the group, leaving no room for Cannon despite a spring that showed flashes.

In four Cactus League appearances, Cannon went 1-0 with a 4.09 ERA across 11 innings, striking out 10 and walking five for a 1.45 WHIP. The numbers were functional, not dominant, and not enough to displace a rotation that was largely set before camp opened.

The deeper issue is 2025. The Georgia product posted a 5.82 ERA and 1.49 WHIP across 22 appearances (17 starts) and 103.2 innings, with an 86-to-38 strikeout-to-walk ratio that pointed to developing but inconsistent stuff. His season was also interrupted by a lower back strain that landed him on the 15-day injured list in early June, required a rehab assignment to Charlotte later that month, and contributed to a stretch of roster volatility that saw him recalled and optioned multiple times before the calendar turned to September.

That pattern of movement is familiar for Cannon. Since his contract was selected by Chicago in April 2024, he has shuttled between the White Sox and the Knights repeatedly, never fully establishing himself at the major-league level while demonstrating enough to keep getting opportunities. He made his MLB debut on April 17, 2024, just one day after his contract was selected.

The plan heading into 2026 is to keep Cannon stretched out in Charlotte's starting rotation, where organizational depth has genuine value. The White Sox used ten starting pitchers last season and figure to need a similar volume again given the injury risk inherent in a rebuilding roster. Cannon retains minor-league options, which gives the organization flexibility to recall him when circumstances demand it.

He is unlikely to be the only Charlotte starter with eyes on Chicago this season. Duncan Davitt, the 26-year-old right-hander acquired from Tampa Bay at the 2025 trade deadline and added to the 40-man roster, was also optioned to Triple-A and figures to compete for big-league starts. Other names in the mix include right-handers David Sandlin and Austin Voth, and left-hander Chris Murphy. Lefty Hagen Smith has drawn positive reviews out of camp and could spend significant time with the major-league club in 2026.

For now, Cannon heads back to a ballpark he knows well. Whether he stays there long is mostly a question of what happens in Chicago's rotation once the season begins.
