The Bay St. Louis Library will become a hands-on support stop for new and expecting parents when it hosts a free community baby shower May 7 from 12:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. The event is built to give Hancock County families both practical supplies and pre-birth information in a setting that is easier to reach, and less intimidating, than a hospital-based program.

United Way of South Mississippi, the Hancock County Library System and the Hancock Health Foundation are partnering on the shower, a combination that connects charitable outreach, public library access and local health support under one roof. The library system says it provides open access to cultural, intellectual, technological and informational resources, and its Bay St. Louis branch serves as administrative headquarters for a network that includes five locations across the county. That makes the library a natural place for families who may not already be connected to hospital programs or nonprofit referral lists.

Priority enrollment notification is being given to Hancock County residents who are expecting a child or have a baby younger than 9 months. For those families, the event is expected to offer free resources, education and donated items, creating a single stop for immediate needs and longer-term guidance. The format matters in a county where support can be spread across different organizations and where a public library can function as a low-barrier point of contact for people who might hesitate to reach out elsewhere.

The Hancock County Library Foundation says its mission is to strengthen the library system’s value to the community and support special projects and endowments, which fits the role the library is taking on here. The Hancock Health Foundation says it works to improve the health and well-being of people who live and work in Hancock County and partners with Ochsner Medical Center-Hancock and other local nonprofits on medically related support, making its involvement a direct extension of its health mission.

The model is not new in Hancock County. A previous community baby shower drew more than 20 moms and families, brought together 17 community organizations and handed out essentials including baby wipes, diapers, diaper bags, bibs, pacifiers, rash cream and books. That earlier gathering also included educational presentations on postpartum depression and psychosis, showing how the county has been using the baby shower format as both celebration and public-health touchpoint.
