Free Hutchinson baby shower offers resources for new parents
Reno County parents can get baby supplies, safe sleep help and local referrals in one free stop at Hutchinson’s community baby shower.

A free community baby shower in Hutchinson will put supplies, safety teaching and local referrals under one roof for new and expecting parents in Reno County. The event is set for May 20 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at 200 E. Sherman and is free to all new and expecting parents.
Bump to Baby of Reno County is hosting the gathering with the Reno County Health Department and Parents as Teachers, with Kids Safe Sleep Community Baby Shower listed as a co-sponsor. Organizers say the event will be come-and-go, and doors will close at 7 p.m. Children are welcome, though no childcare will be provided on site. That setup gives families a practical window to stop in after work, bring kids along and still move through the event at their own pace.
The shower is designed as much for information as for giveaways. Families will find community resource information, self-care and mental health connections, safe sleep instruction, breastfeeding resources and smoking cessation information. Giveaways and raffles are also planned, and a Spanish interpreter will be on site. Safety-approved sleep environments will be provided to those in need while supplies last, adding a concrete supply boost to the event’s education focus.
The emphasis on access fits a broader maternal-child health network in Reno County. The health department says prenatal care is offered on a sliding-fee scale and includes nurses, a social worker, nurse practitioners and contracting physicians. It also helps families with insurance and Medicaid applications, referrals to community services and in-home visitation and support during pregnancy and after a baby arrives. Maternal child health home visits are available for babies up to a year after birth, and WIC provides food benefits to pregnant, postpartum and breastfeeding women.
Bump to Baby classes extend that support before and after delivery, with sessions covering prenatal care, pregnancy health, preterm labor, labor and delivery, breastfeeding basics, infant care and postpartum recovery and interconception health. The county also offers a car seat check program for child passenger safety, giving parents another point of contact after the baby shower ends.

A previous Reno County community baby shower shows how much can happen in a single event. County figures say 33 moms were served, 49 support people attended, 26 businesses and services were present and 17 Pack and Plays were distributed. With that kind of turnout behind it, the Hutchinson shower looks less like a celebration alone and more like a working entry point into the local system of care for families starting out.
