Preparing for a baby can turn into a costly sprint, and the biggest-ticket basics are often the hardest to gather all at once. Novant Health Brunswick Medical Center answered that pressure with a free community baby shower for Brunswick County families, handing out clothing, diapers, toys and toiletries, plus a choice of a stroller, car seat or portable playpen while supplies lasted.

The event was built less like a social shower and more like a practical relief stop for expectant and new mothers who may not have a deep gift network or the money to buy infant gear ahead of time. That focus made the higher-cost items especially meaningful. A stroller, a car seat or a playpen can quickly become the first purchases that stall a household’s preparation, and the medical center framed the shower as a way to ease that burden directly.

Novant described the gathering as annual and countywide, underscoring a role that reaches beyond the exam room. The hospital’s maternity care services already place it in the middle of pregnancy and birth, but the shower showed Brunswick Medical Center working as a community anchor as well, stepping in where the cost of baby supplies can widen the gap between what families need and what they can afford. The medical center’s maternity-events pages also indicate that this kind of support remains part of its ongoing community programming.

The shower has a longer history behind it. Novant said in 2018 that it was holding the event for the fourth year in a row, then said in 2020 that it was doing it for the sixth year in a row. In 2023, the hospital said the program would also include information on breastfeeding, childbirth classes and car seat safety checks, adding education to the giveaways. In 2024, Novant said the event would run from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 4. In 2025, it was scheduled for 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 3, in the Brunswick Medical Center parking lot at 240 Hospital Drive in Bolivia.

By 2025, Novant said it was again partnering with local Brunswick County organizations, and cash donations for the shower were being accepted by the Novant Health Brunswick Medical Center Foundation. The result is a model that goes beyond a one-day giveaway: a hospital using a baby shower to fill real gaps in early parenting, item by item, for families across Brunswick County.
