Dollar General opens third Shippensburg store March 7, creating 6-10 jobs
Dollar General has opened its third Shippensburg store at 306 S. Fayette St.; grand-opening Saturday, March 7 at 8 a.m. with the first 50 adults receiving $10 gift cards.

Dollar General has opened its third Shippensburg store at 306 S. Fayette St., the company announced March 3, and will hold a community grand-opening event Saturday, March 7 at 8 a.m. Starting at 8 a.m., the first 50 adult customers will receive $10 gift cards and the first 100 customers will get Dollar General tote bags, Amber South reported, citing a company news release.
The company said the new South Fayette Street location is expected to create six to 10 jobs as it begins operating in the borough. The store will be open 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. everyday, according to the announcement, and the release framed the hiring as part of local economic benefits tied to the opening.
“At Dollar General, we believe the addition of our new Shippensburg store provides positive economic growth for the community through the creation of new jobs and career growth opportunities; increased accessibility to affordable products; the generation of tax revenue and access to Dollar General Literacy Foundation grants,” said Matthew Simonsen, Dollar General’s senior vice president of business intelligence and development. “As part of our mission of Serving Others, we look forward to being a strong business partner and good neighbor, as well as welcoming customers to our new store.”
The new 306 S. Fayette St. shop joins existing borough locations at 486 E. King St. and 1084 Orrstown Road, and expands a regional footprint the company describes as “nearly 20 stores in Franklin County and Shippensburg, including a DG Market in Greencastle with an expanded grocery section.” The Record Herald illustrated that footprint by publishing a Feb. 25, 2026 photo captioned “Dollar General at 2795 Edenville Road, Chambersburg,” highlighting other local outlets in the chain’s network.
Local reporting and the company news release supplied event and operational details but left some items open for confirmation. The announcement did not specify exact hire dates or whether the 6–10 positions are full-time or part-time, and the company release did not identify whether this store will directly administer Dollar General Literacy Foundation grants to local nonprofits beyond providing “access” as part of the company’s stated community goals.
A separate, unverified Facebook post in a Shippensburg Township community feed says, “Looks to be another Dollar General ... Construction on the new store is planned to begin later this year, though no opening date is set.” That post appears to reference a different proposed site and is not corroborated by the company news release or local coverage about the South Fayette Street location.
The March 7 grand-opening will serve as the store’s formal community welcome, with the timed giveaways and the retailer’s stated goals for job creation and local economic contributions setting expectations for immediate neighborhood impact.
