Nintendo confirms April 24 Japan release for Super Mario Galaxy sequel film
Nintendo turned the Mario sequel into a live-event push, with Mamoru Miyano, Hikakin and a 17:40 JST stage greeting stream ahead of the April 24 Japan launch.

Nintendo is treating The Super Mario Galaxy Movie like more than a film opening in Japan. A live-streamed stage greeting was scheduled for 17:40 JST with voice actor Mamoru Miyano and ambassador Hikakin, putting celebrity recognition and same-day fan attention at the center of the rollout just days before the movie opens in Japan on Friday, April 24.
The sequel follows 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which Nintendo says grossed more than $1.3 billion worldwide. Nintendo’s Japanese cast list puts Miyano as Mario, Ari Ozawa as Peach, Tasuku Hatanaka as Luigi, Kenta Miyake as Bowser, Tomokazu Seki as Toad, Maaya Sakamoto as Rosalina and Daiki Yamashita as Bowser Jr. The scale of that cast, and the decision to lean on familiar Japanese voices, shows how carefully Nintendo is packaging the franchise for domestic audiences while keeping the global film identity intact.
Nintendo has also framed the Japanese release as its own distinct version rather than a simple localization. Miyamoto and Chris Meledandri worked on the Japanese script from the start, and Miyamoto told premiere attendees that the Japanese cut includes phrases unique to Japan. That kind of detail matters inside a company that sells polish as part of the product: the movie is being positioned with the same control over tone and localization that Nintendo applies to its games.
The company has already used its own channels to drive access. Nintendo held a world premiere screening in Kyoto on April 1, then ran Japan early screenings in Tokyo and Osaka through Nintendo Today!, with free entry for applicants who had a Nintendo Account and the smartphone app. The application deadline was March 17 at 15:00 JST, turning a movie screening into a controlled, app-based event that doubled as a platform demonstration.
That strategy will roll straight into the holiday period. Nintendo and Toho Cinemas have lined up Super Mario Theater promotions at five locations from April 24 through May 10, with Luma-themed seat covers, a free Luma snap bracelet, a special video featuring the Japanese voice actors and photo opportunities with Mario and Yoshi. For Nintendo, the movie’s Japan run is becoming a visibility test for the Mario brand itself, and for the people who work on it, a reminder that franchise management now extends well beyond launch day and well into Golden Week.
