Nintendo turns Pikmin Bloom into a collectible retro brand ritual in May event
Nintendo’s May Pikmin Bloom event turned retro cartridges, Mii costumes, and rare mushrooms into a month-long retention loop built on daily walks.
Nintendo is using Pikmin Bloom to keep its legacy art alive in a form that asks less of players than a console launch and more of Nintendo’s own teams. The Game Pak Decor Pikmin event ran from May 1 through May 31, 2026, and it turned a simple walk into a month-long collectible chase built around classic cartridge imagery, Event Challenge missions, and a steady drip of rewards.
The structure mattered. Event Challenge stages handed out random rewards such as seedlings, Pixel-Art Flowers, flower petals, and other items, while a guaranteed Gold Seedling appeared when the Big Flower at the center of the stage bloomed. There were eight different Game Pak Decor Pikmin types, and seedlings grew into one at random, making the set intentionally incomplete unless players kept coming back. Nintendo also layered in special missions tied to Pixel-Art Flowers, which could unlock event-inspired Mii costumes, Nintendo Consoles ’80–’95 Decor Pikmin seedlings, and Playing Card Decor Pikmin seedlings.

That design says a lot about the work behind the event. Brand teams have to steward old Nintendo imagery without freezing it in nostalgia, while event designers build a loop that feels playful instead of transactional. Analysts have to watch whether the month-long cadence keeps people moving, planting, and returning. QA and localization teams have to support a rotating set of missions, shop items, and rewards across regions. In other words, a Pikmin Bloom event is not a side project. It is a test of how Nintendo translates franchise memory into repeat engagement.
Brilliant Mushrooms gave the event its social layer. They dropped Mystery Boxes containing Pixel-Art Flowers and other items, and the Game Pak Decor Pikmin, Nintendo Consoles ’80–’95 Decor Pikmin, and all Playing Card Decor Pikmin were especially effective against them. On select weekends, Giant Brilliant Mushrooms appeared with rare Mystery Boxes, and players could use the Mushroom Battle Bullhorn up to three times a day on those weekends to team up with friends. The Premium Event Pass, open to users level 20 and up, added extra seasonal nectar and more Gold Seedlings on the 4th stage and every fourth stage after that, with first-week purchases also including Pixel-Art Flowers as a bonus.
Nintendo has already shown this formula can be repeated. A similar Nintendo Consoles Event ran in May 2025, near Pikmin Bloom’s 3.5-year anniversary, and it featured Nintendo Consoles ’80–’95 Decor Pikmin plus the debut of Playing Card Decor Pikmin. Nintendo’s support materials say Pikmin Bloom launched in Australia and Singapore on October 27, 2021, and in the Americas on October 28, 2021, as a Niantic app made in partnership with Nintendo. Niantic says its games now draw more than 100 million players a year, with more than a billion friend connections and more than 30 billion miles moved. That scale helps explain why Nintendo keeps investing in low-friction live ops: a month of walking, collecting, and returning can keep an old cartridge image culturally present long after the hardware it came from has stopped shipping.
