Harry Styles and Rosalía bring sharp contrast to the Ivors

The sharpest thing on the red carpet at the 71st Ivor Novello Awards was not sparkle but discipline. Harry Styles arrived in a Zoë Kravitz-coded French-house look, while Rosalía answered with a sleek, sharply tailored counterpoint, and together they made Grosvenor House in London feel like a referendum on who gets to look loud right now. The message was clear: for stars with the biggest fashion instincts, restraint is starting to read as the more modern flex.

That tension fit the occasion. The Ivors took place on Thursday, May 21, 2026, as part of Ivors Week, which ran from May 18 to May 22. The awards, judged by songwriters and composers, celebrate originality, skill and impact in songwriting and screen composing, and this year 16 songwriters and composers collected honors across 14 categories. Thirty-seven percent of the recipients won for the first time, a useful reminder that the room was not only starry but newly fluid.

Rosalía’s appearance carried its own weight. The Ivors Academy had already named her International Songwriter of the Year on April 30, in recognition of LUX, the multilingual 2025 album written in 13 different languages. The academy said the project earned five Billboard No. 1 debuts and entered the Billboard 200 at No. 4, and 2026 marked her first Ivor Novello Award. Her red-carpet restraint mirrored that artistic brief: not excess, but control, with every line of the silhouette doing work.

Styles’ presence added another layer. He came from Amsterdam, where his 10-date tour had just opened, to present Thom Yorke with the Fellowship of the Ivors Academy, the organization’s highest honor and one of the most prestigious in songwriting. Yorke received the Fellowship alongside a posthumous honor for George Michael, collected by Andrew Ridgeley. Elton John, meanwhile, presented Sam Fender’s Songwriter of the Year award before receiving an Ivors Academy Honour himself, after becoming the first president of the academy.

The night was not all polish. Multiple artists used the stage to challenge AI in music and low streaming payments, and academy leaders Tom Gray and Roberto Neri warned that songwriters still face harsh conditions around visibility and pay. That is what gave the Styles-Rosalía contrast its bite: the clothes looked refined, but not decorative. The formula was all clean shoulders, narrow lines and disciplined tailoring, the sort of eveningwear that feels expensive because nothing is shouting.
