Sage Nation finally put a shoe on the runway of its own world, and it makes sense exactly where most loafers and sneakers vanish: under big trousers. The Gemstone 001 is the London label’s first footwear style, a limited-edition derby that lands with enough shape and hardware to hold its own beneath oversized legs instead of getting swallowed by them.

That is the whole point. Sage Nation has built its name since 2020 on sculptural proportions, genderless dressing and clothes that feel tailored without going rigid. The brand’s early code was all oversized cuts, box pleats, exaggerated pockets and meticulous construction, so the move into footwear was always going to need more than a clean dress shoe. Gemstone 001 answers with a defined derby cut, a distinctive G-stone last and alpine-inspired metal lace hooks that give the shoe some bite. It reads less like a delicate city lace-up and more like a dress shoe that spent time in the mountains and came back sharper.

Handmade in Montegranaro, Italy, by Officine Creative, the black leather version also gets a leather sole with rubber inserts, plus both waxed cotton laces and hiking laces. That extra set matters. It lets the shoe swing between polished and rugged, which is exactly the visual tension Sage Nation keeps chasing in its clothes. The heel height sits at 30 mm, enough lift to keep the silhouette planted without tipping into trainer territory. At £485, taxes and duties included, it sits in the serious-shoe lane, but not in fantasy fashion pricing for something built this carefully.

Officine Creative gives the collaboration historical heft. Founded by Nazzareno Di Rosa and making leather shoes since 1968, the company brings a shoemaking pedigree that Sage Nation could never fake. One retailer profile places its launch as a label in 1998, which only adds to the sense that this is less of a novelty drop and more of a proper crossover. Officine Creative also lists a brown airbrushed version through its own store, giving the silhouette another register without changing the underlying attitude.

Sage Toda-Nation has been clear that footwear was always a natural next step, and that is obvious here. The Gemstone 001 is not trying to become the loudest shoe in the room. It is trying to become the shoe that makes Sage Nation’s wardrobe feel complete, especially for a customer already living in wide, sculptural pants.
