One of Metro Detroit's oldest resale shops is about to get a very good spring clean. Council ReSale, the Berkley destination operated by the National Council of Jewish Women, Michigan, hosts its annual Spring Showcase on Sunday, March 22, from noon to 5 p.m. at 3297 Twelve Mile Road, and the rack lineup reads less like a thrift store haul and more like a condensed department store floor: Johnny Was, St. John, Burberry, Theory, Tory Burch, Stuart Weitzman, Lululemon, and Athleta are all expected to be represented, with spring fashion and accessories for both men and women.
The real bargain hunters, though, will want to show up before the showcase. Council ReSale has scheduled three pre-event sales in the days leading up to March 22. On Sunday, March 15, the entire store runs 75% off from noon to 4 p.m. The discount deepens on Monday, March 16, when everything is 90% off from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Then on Tuesday, March 17, the store runs a $35 Fill-a-Bag sale from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., with jewelry and home décor excluded from that offer.
The financial logic behind secondhand shopping is hard to argue with: Capital One Shopping has reported that shoppers save an average of $2,071 per year by buying secondhand. At Council ReSale, all inventory is donated by the community, which means every Burberry piece or pair of Stuart Weitzman heels on the floor arrived there through someone else's closet edit.
NCJWMI President Amy Zeskind is leaning into that connection between clearing out and stocking up. "If you are planning on spring cleaning your closet or your home, Council ReSale would be thrilled to take your clothing and home décor donations," she said. "Then come shop at our Spring Showcase, which offers the perfect opportunity to refresh your wardrobe for the upcoming season without breaking the bank, as you'll find designer and high-end brands at a fraction of the original price."

The store behind all of this has been a Metro Detroit fixture since 1934, when it first opened on Rowena Street in Detroit. It relocated to Berkley in 1990 and recently expanded into the adjacent space, adding 4,400 square feet plus a basement. The new footprint now houses the home décor department, the men's department, and a dedicated donation processing area, which solves a longstanding bottleneck: prior to the expansion, the store consistently struggled to move donations onto the sales floor due to limited space in both the retail and sorting areas.

Proceeds from Council Re|Sale support community impact projects and social advocacy work benefiting local families through NCJW|MI, so every rack you pull from carries more weight than the label inside.

Looking further ahead, a separate anniversary celebration for the store will be held on Sunday, June 22 at 2:30 p.m. at Temple Emanu-El in Oak Park. The event will feature a silent auction, a student pianist from Berkley High School, and a fashion show modeled by customers, staff, and community members wearing pieces from the store itself. Fox 2 Detroit morning anchor Jay Towers will serve as emcee, and tickets are $18 through ncjwmi.org.
