Nail polish as dessert inspiration sounds like a fever dream, but Baked by Melissa CEO and co-founder Melissa Ben-Ishay made it real. The New York-based bakery announced its first-ever major beauty brand collaboration with essie on March 9, translating the nail brand's Spring 2026 Gourmet Grocery collection into a limited run of polish-inspired bite-size cupcakes.

The collection spotlights two of essie's best-selling shades, Marshmallow and Berry Naughty, alongside Unsalted, a new limited-edition buttery yellow hue timed to the butter yellow nail trend dominating spring 2026 fashion and beauty. The full Gourmet Grocery line spans seven shades ranging from tomato reds to buttered yellows, and each polish was reimagined as a corresponding cupcake flavor, though the complete shade-to-flavor mapping was not disclosed in the launch materials.

For Ben-Ishay, the partnership was personal before it was professional. "Essie has been my go-to nail polish for as long as I can remember," she said. "Different colors represent different chapters and special moments in my life, forever tied to some of my most cherished memories, from my first ballet recital to my wedding day. Collaborating with my favorite nail polish brand on this limited-edition launch feels incredibly special, and I hope you love it as much as we do."

Yasmin Dastmalchi, president of essie US, framed the collaboration as a deliberate move to take the L'Oréal-owned brand beyond the nail aisle. "This collaboration is just that, bringing our Gourmet Grocery collection to life in an unexpected, multisensory way," Dastmalchi said. "Partnering with Baked by Melissa allows us to uniquely connect with a brand that uses color differently and create a moment that inspires and brings beauty, culture and experience together."

The timing reflects a measurable shift in consumer behavior. Food-themed nail content saw a 58% increase in Google searches and a 222.3% spike in TikTok views in 2025, making the crossover less of a novelty and more of a calculated category play.

The cupcakes ran through March 23 and were sold in packs of 25 online at BakedByMelissa.com with nationwide shipping, or in packs of 12 exclusively at Baked by Melissa store locations, while supplies lasted. The Gourmet Grocery nail polishes remain available through Target.com, Ulta.com, and Amazon.com. For a brand that built its identity on bite-size treats in every color imaginable, stepping into beauty was less a leap than a logical next course.
