What started as a simple idea turned into a flood of kindness for Battle Ground's senior community. Battle Ground Senior Citizens Inc. expected a modest response when it launched its first-ever Valentine's Day card drive. Instead, volunteers brought in nearly 600 cards destined for residents at Mallard Landing Assisted Living and Creekside Place Memory Care, far surpassing what organizers had imagined.

The nonprofit designed the effort specifically to combat isolation among seniors living in care facilities, hoping the cards would remind recipients they are remembered. Community members of all ages responded with handmade cards, store-bought valentines, and boxes filled with notes for BGSC volunteers to deliver directly to the two facilities.

Momentum built quickly once word spread. Businesses set out collection boxes. Individuals reached out asking how to participate. Community members arrived at luncheons carrying stacks of handmade cards, including one resident photographed holding up a handmade cat-shaped valentine. Schools and local businesses joined neighbors in contributing to the pile, which ultimately exceeded 500 cards delivered and climbed toward 600 total collected.

BGSC volunteers then carried the assortment of colorful valentines directly into the facilities ahead of Valentine's Day 2026, where at least one senior was photographed hugging a card with a wide smile.

"I would like to thank the community that just jumped in on this and helped us make this so successful," said Lori Lindberg, BGSC Board Advisor.

The scale of the response for a first-time drive suggests the Battle Ground community found something worth repeating.
